Calais to Wurzburg and Fussen to Calais

Next week we're off to do the Romantic Road through Baveria from Wurzburg to Fussen. That is already planned, does anybody have a good route from Calais to Wurzburg and Fussen to Calais.

The trip will take a month so time is not a problem - a scenic, non-autoroute journey utilising aires and stelplatz, including Austria but avoiding Switzerland would be ideal. Any suggestions? :-D

As you have plenty of time I would go via Luxembourg & then work you way down the Moselle to Koblenz then down the Rhine before going across to Wurzburg.

The Moselle is Motorhome heaven stelplatz at nearly every village most on the river bank.

Agree with Lenny about route out, if you use aires you could try one at Charlesville Meziers on way out. Even we use stellplatz on the Moselle, something we rarely do in France or Germany, and recommend one at Trittenheim, 7euro with H/U, right next to river and pleasant small town. The stellpatz at Brauneberg is also good, views of river and more like a C/L site, also 7euro with H/U. This stell is also within a bike ride of Bernkastel, a must visit place. The Rhine in section from Koblenz to Rudisheim we stay on sites. From Rhine across to Romantic road, good site on the way called Camping Werthiem Bettingen next to river Maine, ACSI site. We reckon Romantic road is only worth doing from about Rothenburg ODT down with best parts near Neuschwanstein. You could come back via Lake Constance, Black Forest and Alsace. Off to watch Turkish GP so no more time to expand on this.

Please keep us in touch. We are doing Moselle down from Koblenz in June. we are spending Bastille Day with some friends who live in Limousin and then can make our way back up the Rhine or just back through France and thus to Calais. Have not yet done any homework on the route to Koblenz. Haven't even decided which port we are crossing to. Intend to use the Stellplatz as much as possible.

Thanks for all your replies, I've shown them to the Tour Manager (wife).

She has decided that we will travel from Calais to the aire at Charleville-Mezieres, then through Luxenburg to pick up the Moselle. Follow the Moselle using the stelplatz to Koblenz, then follow the Rhine until we strike East for Wurzburg and the start of the Romantic Road.

As yet, we (she) hasn't decided what route we will follow to return to Calais.
