bobalobs Posted May 27, 2011 Posted May 27, 2011 Met at Newbury show an Australian couple who have taken early retirement and are in the process of paying for a nearly new panel van conversion with the intention of spending the next 2 to 3 years traveling around the Uk and Europe. Appears getting insurance as a foreigner and no fixed adress in Uk is not easy. Believe there was a post on this topic in the past but have been unable to trace it. Any help urgently needed as they hope to be on the road within a fortnight. English residents can get insurance when "doing" Australia so I do hope our insurers offer a similar service.
Brian Kirby Posted May 27, 2011 Posted May 27, 2011 Their problem is they have no UK address, which may also cause them problems with registering the vehicle. There is a firm called Down Under Insurance which specialises in insurances for Australians/New Zealanders, so they may be worth trying. I gather the rates are a bit steep, but one New Zealander we met said they were the only source for him. Numerous Antipodeans do float round Europe in UK registered vehicles, though I think many use the address of UK relatives for vehicle registration and insurance. It is the lack of a UK address that causes the problem, not that they are Aussies, or have Australian licences.
Big Momma Posted May 27, 2011 Posted May 27, 2011 Your post on this forum is quite timely. This is a major topic of discussion on a Motorhomers Fulltime Site at the moment (www.motorhome365.com) and as Brian correctly states, the issue is not Nationality but Address. If they were to have a UK registered vehicle and a UK contact address they could use then they would be able to obtain Insurance for in this country and for some European travel (but with time/travel limitations). May be best for you to take a look at the Motorhome365 site and read the posts on the subject ;-)

But the bureaucratic side of motor insurance in the UK has got a lot tighter since then. It needs to be emphasised very strongly that being economical with the truth or being 'creative' is not to be recommended where insurance providers are concerned.
bobalobs Posted May 28, 2011 Author Posted May 28, 2011 Thanks to you all for your helpful and prompt replies which have been closely followed by our Australian friends. The motorhome 365 thread shows what a minefield insurance for fulltimers can be. As soon as I hear the results of their search whilst "playing a straight bat !" I will post further. I know they are grateful for your suggestions to date.
bobalobs Posted June 6, 2011 Author Posted June 6, 2011 Well it is available at a price . £1700 a year which is what the newly qualified youngsters often have to pay. Ironically met friends who are hiring a basic Toyota camper in Australia for 60 days . Insurancecost £400. Which is better value??!!
