Retread24800
Must admit that my (older) fridge only works well on gas if the van is perfectly level, mains and 12V no problem if a bit out of level.. I look forward to the rest of this thread.8-)
paulmold
Had a problem with a fridge a few years ago and sent an email to Dometic asking if they expected fridges to last more than a few years when they get used for probably no more than 6 weeks a year in a caravan. I got a reply 4 months later! to tell me that because they are not continually used they did not expect them to last anywhere near the life of a domestic fridge. gboden65
Noted Paul thanks, but I use the van 45 week each year, I suppose they may say it is overused can't win can we, :-D
Dave Newell
When you cleaned the burner did you also clean the flue out? If not then it is a fair bet that it is the cause of your problem. If the flue is sooted up badly then the soot will limit the heat energy that can be absorbed into the coolant and therefore limit performance. D. the gog
had a similar problem a few years ago and was advised to take fridge out, turn it upside down for a few minutes, refit fridge, let it stand for a few hours to settle down then switch on, it then worked ok for a further year. Probably not the expert solution, but when needs must........................ :-S
Dave Newell
the gog - 2011-06-05 12:22 AM had a similar problem a few years ago and was advised to take fridge out, turn it upside down for a few minutes, refit fridge, let it stand for a few hours to settle down then switch on, it then worked ok for a further year. Probably not the expert solution, but when needs must........................ :-S This "trick" only affects the coolant (ammonia) and being as the OP has said it works fine on 12V and 240V then the coolant circuit is fine and inverting the fridge will not make any difference at all. Bearing in mind that the fridge works on the electrical power sources and the gas flame lights then there can only be one of two possible causes; low gas flame not generating enough heat or the boiler flue tube cannot absorb the heat. Most likely cause is soot in the flue tube acting as an insulater and preventing the flames heat being absorbed into the coolant. D.
Chippy
Had the same problem, tried all the usual tricks including cleaning the flue and even replaced the burner and jet. I eventually found the thin gas pipe running from the gas valve on top down to the burner was clogged up. Cleaned it out by pushing a length of old bicycle brake cable up it and got all manner of black soot out. Fridge now works fine.
