deegee
I would like to fit some fold-up extra seat-belted seating to a motorhome. Can someone tell me who is responsible for approving such adaptions as safe? Is it the DVLA? When I built my own van in 1993, you had to have a private contractor inspect it and issue a certificate which you then presented to the DVLA who amended the V5. yrocker
I would think an MOT tester would be your first point of call!
Guest peter
And clear it with your insurance company as well I would have thought.
colin
I would guess it needs inspecting at same stations that do kitcars.
Guest peter
That would be the MOT station then, as that's all you need for a kit car.
Brambles
Inspectors from the Vehicle and Operator Services Agency would have to carry out an inspection at one of their test centres. You would have to make sure the seat belts, mounts and seat showed compliance with full type-approval standard for teh vehicle or an acceptable alternative. I think you will find this is a much bigger task than you initially envisage as you will need a strong frame bolted through to the chassis of the vehicle and again show it has compiance with the the requirements for installation of seatbelts. Brambles
Peter. The body responsible for regulating vehicles on the roads is the DVLA, which ensures they are safe and fit for purpose. For a Kit Car the test required is called the Individual Vehicle Approval which came into effect in spring 2009 to replace the Single Vehicle Approval. It checks that the vehicle is designed and constructed to meet the safety and environmental standards required. Inspections are carried out at VOSA approved sited by examiners from VOSA. Once it has passed, the vehicle is issued with an Individual Approval Certificate and can be registered with the DVLA. It would be a similar route for getting extra seatbelts approved and the registering this with the DVLA so the registration document can be updated. Surely far easier to buy a MH with the extra seats and belts already fitted? Keith.
flicka
Hi Deegee & welcome to the forum Respectfully the legislation have changed significantly since your 1993 conversion. It's no longer a DIY job, IMHO. It may be worthwhile approaching Auto-Trail, to see if they can retrofit their option offered on their new motorhomes. http://www.auto-trail.co.uk/index.php/contacts or Coachbuilt GB http://www.coachbuiltgb.co.uk/ Alternatively if you still want to go ahead yourself, I would recommend having a look at the Self-Build Motor Caravanners Club website:- http://www.sbmcc.co.uk/
