Where to go... South Wales... help requested.

Hi everyone, we are off on the 22nd of this month, heading south from Nottinghamshire. We are meeting fellow motorhomers at St David's in Pembroke about 7 to 10 days later. Our problem is, we are unsure where to visit enroute. We love the Gower and Port Eynon so might head there again, but we fancy somewhere different for a change. We intend to go out walking and cycling but are a bit wary of some of the small roads with high hedges that are sometimes treated like brands hatch by some motorists making it unsuitable for cyclists, plus we have a dog trailer for our pooch for when we go on longer cycle journeys. Anyway, our main critaria is simply.... COAST...... not inland. Places where we can cycle and walk or simply relax on a beach. I know it seems like a tall order but I am sure you lot will come up with some superb ideas based on a wealth of experience, you always do.  :-)

As always, any and all replies much appreciated.

....as a quick first response, You might (if you can get on) find the CC site at Pembrey meets your requirement.

Adjacent to the sea, and the country park, with a mainly off-road, well-maintained coastal cycle track going a fair distance in both directions (though I've only done it to the East).

According to literature, there are dog bans on some of the beaches, but still great swathes available for dog walking.

Narberth is a good stop off point, close to Tenby and other attractions such as National Botanical gardens, Oakwood and quite a few others. There are numerous walks available, and the roads are not too bad for cycling.

We use Newgale campsite very regularly, but as you've got a dog, you wont be able to stop there, shame really £5 per person per night, right on the Pembrokeshire cliff path (bloody steep in places), beach is 25 yards away, no groups and a wonderful laid back site. The owner is a lovely lady in her later years, and she also owns the farm up the road, where you could stop with your dog. Plus you can get the bus up to St Davids (as we did at the weekend) for £3.50 return.

If you head out towards the Gower, there are quite a few sites before you get to the narrow twisty section of road leading to Port Eynon, Llangennith etc. and the roads are main ones.

To be honest, if you are not too bothered about being on a beach, the sites a mile or so inland are a better bet, there'll be less traffic, fewer kids and a more relaxed time can be had.

Thanks for the quick replies, will try the Pembrey and Newgale sites even if we have to stay on the farm, that ok by us. Sites further inland are also ok as we would just cycle towards the coast most days, any more help out there please just let me know.

On the way down (or back) why not visit Cardiff.

The council have a well run site by the River Taff adjacent to the international cricket ground, close to Cardiff Castle and the Millenium Stadium.

http://www.outandaboutlive.co.uk/campsite-finder/UnitedKingdom/Wales/Cardiff,Swansea&TheValleys/Cardiff/CardiffCaravanPark.p2068.html

From the campsite you can cycle or walk along the Taff Trail to Cardiff Bay and along the Barrage to Penarth. From Penarth you can catch the train back to Cardiff.

While in Cardiff go to see a show at one of the many venues.

Heritage Coast at Ogmore by Sea and Southerndown - stepping stones over the river near Ogmore to the dunes at Merthyr Mawr.

Llansteffan and Laugharne lovely small towns on river estuaries.

Freshwater West – magnificent beach.

Park at Stackpole Quay, and walk around to Bosherton Lily Ponds, and Broadhaven beach, then back along cliffs, via Barafundle Bay to Stackpole Quay for a cream tea in National Trust Tea Rooms.

The Dale Pensinsula. Marloes sands.

Or try approaching St David’s from the North – the stretch of coast from Aberystwyth to Cardigan is less crowded than the Gower and Pembrokeshire.

[AVOID Tenby…. You REALLY don’t want to go anywhere near it! Honest!]

Hi

You could try Wisemans Bridge near Saundersfoot for a day or two, (a bit expensive over the school hol period). It's right on the beach, with a lovely walk/cycle ride along the coast following the old mini train track (now a cycle path) through three tunnels into Saunderfoot. Probable best mid week this time of year, and booking in advance is essential. Its not a large site, taking about 30 units, and the toilet block does the basics, but it is very well laid out with access right onto the beach

Regards

Dave

Stayed in a small village called Manorbier, about 6/7 miles west of Tenby last year. Park farm camping was the name of site we stayed on. It was being updated at that time. Village is a short walk with a nice pub and small general store. Overall a lovely site and village with cliff walks and a lovely beach. Enjoy. *-)
