Economical route Ruen to Bordeax

After many years of using the popular route from Ruen to Bordeaux that goes through Dreux, Chartres, Tours and Poitiers, this year was hard going. The traffic around Poitiers was particularly heavy the number of roundabouts appears to increase each year and the traffic jam at Saint-Remy-Sur-Avre on the N12 was about 10 miles long.  In the past this has been the Michelin “economical” route but now I see that Michelin suggest Ruen, Alencon, Sumur, Niort and Saintes. Has anyone any experience of the route that goes down through Sumur? Anyone able to compare these routes?

Don't do it. Stick to Rouen, Evereux, Dreux, then get on the motorway at Tours and get off at Poitiers Sud then onto Angouleme and down the N10 to Bordeaux. We live Just south of Angouleme and we find that this is the best route, we have tried most of them. It is worth the Toll Fees Tours/Poitiers because of all the roundabouts at both places. We don't use motorways normally.

You have just confirmed what we were thinking on the way up. Many thanks.

Dead right, you have to get out of the mindset that saids "I'm not using toll roads". Use them when its to your benefit. We do the same around Biarrritz, its otherwise not worth the hassle.

If you follow Rouen, Evreux, and then take the D52E/D52 just south of Prey, you can drop down the east side of Dreux and onto the N154 south to Chartres, avoiding St Remy-s-Avre. Autoroute says about an extra 15 minutes, at motorhome driving speeds. At worst, that should break even with the St Remy jam, but should offer a useful gain overall.

If you then take the N10 south from Chartres, via Chateaudun (by pass to east) and Blois (by passed to east), you have two choices. First via Romorantan and Villefranche to Vierzon and A20 (non toll), or second via Selles-sur-Cher and Valencay to Vatan and A20. Follow either to Limoges, then either Perigueux via N21 and on to Bordeaux via A89 or D6089, or follow A20 down to Brive, and then A89 or D6089 to Bordeaux.

Not as quick as via Tours and A10, but possible with no tolls, or with only a shortish length of A89 toll between Perigueux to Libourne. Better? Who can say? But, less droning down boring and expensive toll autoroutes, and some nice places en-route to compensate for the extra time taken. Just an idea, mind! :-D

We do the same and use the motorway around Bayonne as it is a nightmare to drive through.
