There are a few "Rhine in flames" - the one you mentioned and a week or so later there is another one at Sankt Goar just 2 miles further up river.

The camp site situated between Sankt Goar and Oberwessel is the Lorely Blick (translated is the Lorely view) is ok when there is no festival on but gets overcrowded at fest time. It is also quite noisy as it is situated on the bank of the river and you have a busy road on each side of the river and a railway line on each side. With the hills also on each side the sound is reflected back from cars trains and even the barges diesel engines as they negotiate the bend.

If you can get on the overflow / temporary site you will probably need your own facilities - I haven't been on that one as I have always managed to get on Lorely Blick.

To view the firework display you will need to be on the west bank of the river (same side as the camp site) and just follow the crowds - better to get a high position on one of the bridges if you can. But don't worry you will see the spectacle as the fireworks go very high.

The display doesn't start until it is fully dark so don't go too early as you will have a long time on your feet.

We were in the region on around these dates last year and it is very busy, like August. Not only Rhine in flames but all the villages hold their wine festivals around this time. Their is a nice ACSI site just outside St. Goar but away from the river, called Friedenau we got in their.

We regularly use Friedenau if we are in transit.

Fairly basic, but very friendly site, and much quiter than being on the riverside.

A short walk down into the town, and some good and characterful eating/drinking places on the way.
