Mel E
We too saw the 2000 eclipse in France - at Blangy sur Bresle which has a superb municipal camp site, great for an overnight or several nights exploring the area. Colin, the reason the clouds parted was that they were Cumulus and the lack of sun's heat reaching the ground as the eclipse started meant the temporary end of thermals to form them. Remember how they all came back after the eclipse? The behaviour of the locals was also amazing. The area around the camp site and lakes was crowded with locals, but the moment totality passed and the sun crept back into view they all started packing up. Ten minutes later they were all gone, and we were alone with the last 10 or 15 minutes of partial eclipse!
