Advert in this month's Caravan Club magazine:

"Overnight motorhome stays on Bournemouth Beach - From September 2011, enjoy 1 or 2 night stays from 6pm to 11am. Sleep yards from the shoreline and wake up to glorious panoramic bay views - a unique new opportunity! Book now on 01202451781"

The cost of this unique opportunity (with no facilities) £20 per night. (lol)

Will they be swamped with bookings, answer on a postcard to Bournemouth council. (lol)

I wouldn't pay it either!

Nevertheless can it be seen as a previously closed door opening maybe just a little?

Applause to the council in that they are at last starting to accept that motorhomes do actually exist and just maybe there is profit to be gained by encouraging them to stay?

Problem is they will probably get very few if any take ups on it & then decided there is no requirement for Motorhome overnight spots in the town.

Going this weekend to Bournemouth for a Jive dancing weekend, staying on a CS at the edge of town £5 a night buses every 10mins to the centre until after midnight.

If you think that's dear, go and visit carinthia in austra at £30 to £40 a night one was £50. Very expensive place to visit.

Not worried about the cost but can see 3 problems here which indicate who ever is operating the scheme has not really grasped the concept of an aire:

First the need to book ahead; it is just being able to turn up that is such a plus of the aires idea.

Second the hours restriction; If parked in such a nice place why would we want to drive away at 11.00 am? Fine put in a 24/48/72 hours total stay restriction to stop long term stays but not you must leave by 11.00 and not arrive before 6.00.

Third the lack of any facilities is a concern. What will almost certainly happen is that someone will dump toilet in hedge, in drain etc and facility will be closed. Yes there are aires in France (aire de stationments) which have no facilities but there is often a service point near by and directions to it are often provided.

Just had another thought. As advert was from a Caravan mag is this facility just for motorhomes or open to caravans also? This would explain the need for booking, leaving by a certain time etc as these are the sort of things that the tugging community seem to enjoy!

Ah yes, those were the days where we (sadly) could recite most, if not all, of the sketches parrot (Norwiegen Blue) fashion!

A mite off-topic perhaps, but some entertaining stuff about motorhome parking in the Bournemouth area on:

http://www.bournemouthecho.co.uk/news/9017920.Anger_over_Swanage_s_seafront_motorhomes/

The comments column at the end of the article makes interesting reading.

The newspaper article was dated 10th May 2011, I wonder if there has been a follow up article or parking restrictions brought in?

The CC Magazine advert referred to the following webpage (that carries no motorhome-related details):

http://www.bournemouth.co.uk/beach

and the phone-number to this website:

http://www.lymington.org/beach/durleychine.html

The photo in the CC advert shows a motorhome parked on the roadside close to a pavement running parallel to a beach. There appear to be no markings on the road to indicate spaces dedicated to motorhome parking. Basically, you pay £20 for a pre-booked up-to-17-hours 'overnight' stay with (presumably) a maximum of two successive stays.
