donna miller
Today is the anniversary of the day 33 miners from Chile started their 69 days being trapped underground. It has been reported that most of them have struggled to cope with the experience, and quite a few are still out of work. It is nigh on impossible to be able to understand what they went through. I don't think I could have coped in that situation, could you?

I don't even like getting into a lift. I don't have that much faith in mechanical things.
donna miller
Just up the road from home at Blaenaevon is "The Big Pit", a former working mine now open to the public. It's free to enter and they just ask for donations to keep it running. You travel down on the original pithead lift to about 100 metres, you are then taken on a tour of the old coal faces and tunnels by one of the guides who all worked the face when it was open. As well as the pony stables, there is still a lot of the original machinery down there, all the pit props are original and you have to wear proper mining helmets with the battery packs as worn by miners years ago. A large proportion of the walk is stooped over, so mind your head. Being underground, there is still the slight risk of methane gas build up, and there are test lamps all throughout the tour. It's astounding to be told that children as young a 3 or 4 would work down there in total darkness opening and closing the air control doors, in those days they had to buy their own candles so often had to go for days without lighting them because they were so expensive. If you have a spare couple of hours when in South Wales, this place is a must to visit, as well as the underground tour, there is a museum and plenty of other informative displays and exibitions including the pit baths. Close by as well to make a day of it, are the old tin mines at Blaenaevon as well. Going down in that lift is pretty scary, I'm a bit claustophobic so that made it worse, once you are down there though it was fascinating.
