Bavaria

Do a search lots of info on various threads.

Places not to miss Fussen on the western side & Berchtesgaden (Hitler's bunkers & Eagles Nest) in the east, Lake Chemiesse for some contrast.

Chemisesse & Fussen good for cycling, Berchtesgaden area for good strenuous walking.

We spent sometime in Bavaria earlier this year. The intention was to travel down the Romantic Road from Wurzburg to Fussen. There was so much to see we only completed half of the route (still there is always next year).

Ideas of how to travel there are to be found in tihs thread:

http://www.outandaboutlive.co.uk/forums/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=23572&posts=8

As we had plenty of time (so we thought) we went via Luxembourg & then worked our way up the Moselle from Trier to Koblenz then down the Rhine before going across to Wurzburg.

The Moselle is Motorhome heaven stelplatz at nearly every village most on the river bank.

As well as Berchtesgarden as mentioned we also visted Mittenwald stayed on an ACSI site with a lovely view and a river around one side of it. Nice cycle into a pretty town and a stunning cable car ride from the town. Good restaurant on site, clean facilities but a bit tired. Recommend this one Naturcampingpark Isarhorn. :-D

Tomo - 2011-08-09 7:41 AMHi All,Thinking about going to Bavaria in September. Anybody want to tell me where to head for and what to see. One Life Live It

Hello Tommo

When not going back to my birthplace of Thailand - we tour Bavaria on a regular basis, in fact setting off end August from Hull, and travelling around for a month.

Some nice places to get to:-

Chiemsee - especially King Lugwigs palace on the lake ( Herrenchiemsee)

South of Munich, a couple of nice areas are Ammersee - the pretty people & rich - from Munich live in the area. Also try Starnbergsee just the next lake along.

If in the area try "Linderhof" again one of King Ludwig's fantasy palaces. In Fussen then visit Neuschwanstein castle(schloss) - used by Disneyland as the Fairy tale castle for Snow White.

Vist Ulm for it's cathedral and the old "Fisherman's" quarter and  also get to see the most crazy wonky hotel, the crooked hotel.

Then travel down into the Black Forest & visit "Titisee" - cuckoo clocks abound!!

We've travelled around this area for the last 12 or so years, and still unearth little gems to visit.

Ping me on my private e-mail if you need any further help, always willing to help I am.

Hope some of the above is of use to you. Other members on this site will also give you some good advice and more ideas of places to visit.

One word of advice - "Enjoy"!!!

Hi All,

A couple of other ideas:

If you are interested in the history of aviation and find yourselves near Lake Constance with time on your hands try The Zeppelin Museum in Friedrichshafen, web site here: http://www.zeppelin-museum.de/home_en.0.html We spent an afternoon in there back in 2009. Also they fly the modern Zeppelin from a local airfield if you keep your eyes on the sky during the afternoons I was told that trips are available but unfortunately we didn't have the time.

There is a good size Stelplatz in Friedrichshafen.

Into mountain driving? Don't miss the Alpenstrasse which runs very roughly along the German/Austian border. Fantastic views, very beautiful and with lots of interesting villages along the way, Garmish, Oberammergau and many others.

Again lots of easy parking in lovely Stelplatz.

As said above, enjoy!

Sorry Tomo, meant to say one thing to be aware of is the weather. While we went in June so I don't know if it's going to be different in september make the most of the days when the weather is good. We had very changeable conditions. One day it was very hot and we went site seeing on the motorbike, so hot i was sweating just putting on the helmet, (lake Konnigsee is a must) and so we planned the next day but the clouds had closed in so the mountain tops were pointless. Alright at ground level so plenty to do but don't plan to do the cable car/ chair lifts every day.

Hi All,

If you are around the Munich/ Berchtesgaden areas between 17th & 19th September, look out for a fleet of old, garishly decorated British cars. They will be taking part in the Crumball Rally "The Great Escape" which ends in Munich on the Sunday night.

The rally is for cars costing ~£200 and takes in Antwerp, Leipzig, Colditz, Zagan (Stalag Luft III), Dresden, Munich & Berchtesgaden - all in 3 days. The round trip is about 2000 miles if the cars make it! 8-) 8-)

The Rally is loosely based on the film "The Great Escape" the RAF POW breakout from Stalag Luft III

Most of the participants raise money for charity, ours this year is Parkinson's & Lymphoma Trust so if you see a "G" reg Saab 9000 trying to look like a Spitfire with the squadron letters "DUX" down the side - give us a wave - that is "The L'AimeDucks" chariot for this year. :-D :-D

(I will post on Chatterbox with some links & pictures after the car is decorated)

If you do not have the Reise Mobil Bordatlas that lists the stellplatze then try the following links:

Been on that cable car without any drama, was temped to do a tandem paraglide jump until I saw the price. They do launch themselves of the mountain very close to the cable car.

Same here been up that cable car and enjoyed the lovely views :-D we had a job trying to persuade my Brother-in-law that it wasnt a good idea to try the paragliding it was only the price that did it in the end was it 250euro ?? something like that, both he and my better half endded up gliding though in the little airfield in Fussen.

It is a lovely area and the views all around you are breathtaking Have a lovely time.
