Hi Spospe,

I would be interested to hear how it performs.

Cheers.

I bought this item from Amazon. Looks almost exactly the same as the morgan one. Without using it when outside in the van can get my own signals and 2 neighbours. But with the Alfa AWUS036NEH I can get up to 20. Have not tried it when away yet. All the prices are with the different type mountings and Output power. Mine is 1 watt and cost about £20 incl 3 metre USB cable and postage

I have got both an increase in range and speed (up from 54mbs to 72mbs). The system works well and you can allways use the in-built wi-fi in your laptop if you do not want to plug the USB aerial in for whatever reason.

I use Windows XP on the laptop and it works OK with it.

Have to say I am somewhat mystified, yet intrigued! Not being a technophobe, I'm also in the dark - even having looked at the Amazon site - as to exactly what it does.

Currently, and when in Uk only, I have a mobile dongle, which generally just plus into the USB on the laptop, and i can get my internet pretty much all over the UK.

When abroad, it's a different story, as of course the mobile dongle is a prohibitive cost if used. So I rely on Wifi if on campsites etc, and frequently - even if it's paid for - it is pretty much unusable from the pitch/ in the motorhome, and often even when going to reception/bar or wherever it's supposed to be strongest, is still pretty poor - slow and drops down a lot. I assume this peice of equipment is designed to improve the signal when in the motorhome, but is it clipped on outside to something or other, then cabled into the USB on the laptop, or is it just an 'aerial' which effectively boosts the signal (bit loike the TV booster?), but no cable is needed?

Would it work, say, if (in France usually!) you sit outside Macdonalds to use their wifi, rather than going into the outlet! Sounds interesting, but would like to know how it works, and the results of any users.

This device is not a dongle (mobile phone system for computers and paying mobile phone rates for connection) it is a special amplified wi-fi aerial which plugs into a spare USB port on a laptop / netbook and acts to boost the range and speed of the wi-fi system that comes with the laptop / netbook (it would also work with a desktop).

The claim is that it will increase the range by a factor of three over the built-in system (I cannot prove, or disprove that claim, but it does certainly boost both speed and range to some degree).

Keith,

It increases the range. At the moment I have it sitting on a high shelf in my PVC which has a glass fibre top. I have a 3 metre USB cable to my laptop which runs vista. If I need more range I will try it on the roof. On the amazon site it has suction mounts and window mounts if required

I've had one for a few months and wouldn't be without it. One a site in France this Spring most people had to go and sit outside reception to receive the free wi-fi. I was able to log on and get a good signal from a hundred metres away.

They're also brilliant if you want to piggy-back on free wi-fi from McDonald's and the like, in that you can often park up on the adjoining supermarket car park or whatever and still get a good signal. The best £25 I've ever spent on a computer accessory.

I use one of these Peter, I find it works well just propped against one of the cab side windows tried it outside didn't make much odds. Comes with good wifi detector software & mounting bracket.

Thanks, will give it a try.

I have only just started using Wi Fi, so don't have an account yet but have been surprised how often I have been able to get a free (although weak) wi fi signal. Even parked in side streets. Must have been coming from somebody's house :-)

Just passing on a news of a good buy that I made earlier this week.

If you use a laptop / netbook then such an aerial may be of help to you and no I am not related to Mr. Morgan ;-)
