marydot
Can anyone advise us on what size dish we need for southern Portugal and Spain? Not bothered about sky, just main English channels. Mary
Dave225
According to most of the dish suppliers you need a dish of about 1.5 meters in diameter to get the British Channels in the south of Spain with any certainty. This is a lot bigger than the normal 60 or 90 cm dishes used in the UK or even northern Europe, so is a bit of a handful to carry. You will meet campers who claim to be able to get the UK channels with a smaller dish, and they may be correct, but it is not the norm. All the houses we saw with UK residents had the whopper in the back garden somewhere so they could get their dose of Corrie etc. With a smaller dish you will easily get the Astra satellite which covers most of Europe but although it has plenty of German, Dutch, French, Italian, in fact every EU country channels, it has only 4 English language ones. CNN, BBC News 24, SKY News and possibly HBO at various times. Unless you are a news buff and enjoy watching the same thing over and over again, it is not usually top of the list. There may be new gizmos out there that promise to deliver the UK channels down there but I have not heard of them as yet. Have a chat with a satellite supplier. scramblers
Roadpro sell a 100cm dish and say that this "1-metre dish gives it unrivalled coverage of all satellites and enables reception of Astra 2D signals as far south as Valencia" https://www.roadpro.co.uk/retail/product_detail.aspx?prod=Crystop+Autosat+2S+100cm+Satellite+System+Twin+LNB&id=1411 I don't think it is possible to buy any satellite dish that will pick up English channels that far south as it is so far outside the footprint of the Astra 2D satellite - but I may wrong! Klyne
Although I have no personal knowledge of this I have read elsewhere that SKY can pick up UK programmes on a relatively smaller dishes further south because they have a north and a south beam which covers a bigger footprint than Astra 2D. Even so I would imagine you would still need a minimum of about 90cm dish. This might help http://www.satelliteforcaravans.co.uk/ David
