Sentencing of rioters

But leading criminal barrister John Cooper QC warned that some sentences were being handed down as a "knee-jerk reaction", "responding to the public's anger and the politicians' rhetoric".

"It's the duty, in my view, of all those who direct sentencing to be independent and not to be influenced by angry Britain," he said.

"There's no doubt that some individuals will need to be sentenced very firmly, but my concern is that the sentences given in the last week have been disproportionate and somewhat hysterical.

"What's happening here is they're being unduly increased to appease public anger and, as far as the magistrates are concerned, potentially influenced by the views of politicians."

Two in three people charged in connection with the riots and looting have been remanded in custody, compared with a remand rate of just one in 10 for serious (indictable) offences in 2010, Ministry of Justice figures show.

8-)8-)8-)................It's no wonder "Da Yoof's" get away with it with muppets like him on their side*-)

I heard on the telly last night that 50% of the people processed by the courts every year are repeat offenders8-)............Must be a nice earner if your a lawyer;-)........No wonder he wants them let out so he can trouser another load of tax payer cash the next time the idiots get caught...............!!

All shamelessly pinched from another site.

WOW..!! The new trailer for the new movie of the Planet of the Apes looks great.......oh!.....wait a minute....its Sky news reporting from Tottenham.

David Cameron, "I'm granting Metropolitan police emergency powers to use water cannons, rubber bullets and tear gas, to take back control of our streets from these poncing parasites that are biting the hand's that feeds them. In addition I'm deploying the British Army as a visible presence to provide the authority that is so very lacking".....Carlsberg don't do Prime Ministers......But if they did........

Spurs have signed a new player......robertelli

This years Comic Relief will be held in Africa,

In aid of the people in London.

Apparently a new masked Superhero double act were seen on the streets of Tottenham last night.

Bla**man and Robbing.

The rioting spread to Islington. The rioters were seen throwing picnic boxes. glasses of cava and smoked salmon canapes.

Picked up my free laptop over this weekend from PC World, apparently the offer was only available in Tottenham.

Following massive riots in the Lords Hill area of Southampton, council officers estimated that 5 million pounds-worth of improvements have taken place.

2 Asian junkies accidental snorted curry powder instead of coc*ine. Both were rushed to hospital, one is now in a korma, the other now has a dodgy tikka.

At the height of the riots, two Ir*sh men broke into Ladbrokes and lost £50 each.

Rumour has it that looters stole Arsenal's trophy cabinet. Police are looking for two panes of glass.

The Met will use water cannons in future, they will also add Persil to stop the co*lo*rs running.

Dave

Problem is that it isn't the rioters getting sentenced is it?

From what I have seen, police get there after the gangsters who broke in have snatched what they wanted and gone. Then they send in snatch squads to grab those who are on their own and don't run fast enough. The ones being sentenced seem to be opportunist petty thieves.Often caught on camera because they never went prepared and covered their faces like the gangsters and rioters.

Six months for helping himself to a £3.50 case of water from lidls!

14 months to a mother who accepted a stolen pair of shorts from her lodger!

4 years for writing something on the internet, and somebody else who did that got off with a caution!!

The Rioters Prayer:D.........

Courtesy of another forum

Our father, who art in prison, only mum know's his name, thy riots come, read it in the Sun, in Birmingham, as it is in London. Give us this day our welfare bread & forgive us our looting, as we're happy to loot those who defend stuff against us. Lead us not into employment, but deliver us free housing, for thine is the spliff, the blackberry & the lager, forever & ever.............innit

The sentences are being handed in the context of the overall crimes of looting, rioting and arson.

If you receive stolen goods as a result of any of those crimes I think a " harsh " sentence is justified.

It's long been my theory that if you gave the receivers of stolen goods a much harsher sentence than the thief, stealing goods would become less attractive as you would lose your market.

And he didn't get " 4 years for writing something on the internet" ( there is no such crime ) he got four years for inciting a riot.

:-(

p.s. And don't worry about them, they will all be let out early anyway.

He did not incite a riot, he posted something stupid whilst drunk, and the only people who turned up for his 'riot' were the police. The ones who did incite a riot got away with it. (and are probably laughing at the mugs who got caught.) Thats my point.

In a rare moment of honesty, Cameron summed it up when he said it was 'sending a tough message'.

Thats all it is. Its not fair, its not justice. Its just 'sending a tough message'

From what I've seen and read he was charged with trying to " organize and orchestrate " a riot, and to my mind that is the same as to 'incite'.

The fact that he was unsuccessful is not relevant - and being drunk when you commit a crime is not normally seen these days as a reasonable excuse. ( Although it used to be)

As to whether or not it's "fair" - well no doubt there is a lot of debate about that, but I'm not too concerned myself - if you commit crimes you are always taking a chance on a " fair" sentence if you are caught.

And if they are sending a 'tough' message - well why not ?

We will have to wait and see if it works next time there's a riot.

We will have to agree to disagree.

I went down to asda this morning to fill up with fuel for this weeks work, diesel for the truck and petrol for the mowers and strimmers.

As I was filling the containers with petrol the pump went off, i asked the cashier to turn it back on and she said we are not allowed to let customers fill petrol containers?

According to her they have been stopped by the police in case the fuel is used to make petrol bombs, well how am I to run my business if I can't buy fuel in the proper fuel containers?

if you are caught.

But the ones who orchestrated the riots have not been caught, have they? I can see them looking at the sentences and just thinking they won't be so daft as to be caught like that. Posting messages on their home computer, going out without a hood, or without the protection of being in a gang, hanging around after the shop has been smashed open instead of grabbing all and getting away...mugs..they will think

In the days when they used to hang pickpockets, (is that a tough enough message?) there were pickpockets in the crowds who were watching the hangings. The detection rate was so poor they did not expect to be caught. (Those who were being hung were probably innocent, fitted up to claim a reward.)

Tough sentencing only works if they believe they will be caught !

Trying to make up for a pathetic detection rate by hammering the tiny minority who get caught, is a sure and certain sign of a tenth rate criminal justice system.

Incidentally I saw Eric Pickles on TV talking about sentencing of looters. I don't know how he kept a straight face. When he was caught looting £300 in so called expenses, all he got was asked to pay it back!!

Its more than likely that the cleverer type gangsta rioter had the brains to hide his identity and it was the idiots who jumped in for a bit of a jolly got caught out and was punished.

Perhaps the harsh sentences will deter idiots from getting involved in any future riots, then again they will more than likely cover their faces?

Would just have loved to be in the public gallery and seen the look of shock on the faces of those sentenced.

Here's one guy with the courage to speak the truth about the riots:

I could spend all afternoon pointing out the flaws and contradictions in that, but I'd rather be out in the sunshine. If you really can't see through it you are a lost cause anyway.

It could be a win-win situation !

Following this mans' logic, every time there is a riot we demolish a thousand or so houses that belong to those involved ( to add to those demolished by the rioters ) thereby increasing the housing shortage - so the value of OUR houses will increase!

As an added bonus in your case pelmetman, IF a lot of replacement houses are built, using our taxes, a lot of 'em might need new pelmets !
