tonyg3nwl Posted August 26, 2011 Posted August 26, 2011 Hi. The time is close for me to renew, tax and insurance and arrange 1st MOT test. I am quoted £39 for MOT, test so that doesn't seem too bad. My insurance will send a quote by the middle of september with automatic chargeing to plastic to comply with latest prevention of uninsured vehicles rules, but as it goes through a broker there is a surcharge. I am happy in principle to stay with the same INSURER, but wonder if I can go direct to avoid broker fee (Scrooge, yes!), and what are the implications. Alternatively, are the motorhome insurers only working through brokers, as it is a somewhat specialist market, Road tax I usually do on line and sadly there is no negotiation on the cost. Just have to pay, or take vehicle off road. Rules require it to be maintained insured however, so cant win. any comments? tonyg3nwl (?)
PJay Posted August 26, 2011 Posted August 26, 2011 Hi Tony I do not go through a broker. I always phone around the different insurers to check prices. They are usually not a lot of variation in prices. We have been with caravan guard for the last five years, and have been very happy with them, as we had an accident, and they were very prompt to respond. You will find several insurers in the MMM adverts, try giving some a call P
tazdog6007 Posted August 26, 2011 Posted August 26, 2011 do the rounds tony, mine is due soon and have had phone calls from three offering a quote.all seem pretty good, havent read a complaint on any on the forum.
Rayjsj Posted August 26, 2011 Posted August 26, 2011 No way will I allow a Company to 'Automatically' re-charge my card. I insist on being able to 'Shop around' for a better quote BEFORE I pay. Can you imagine the hassle of trying to get re-imbursed if you go elswhere ?? plus 'Administation costs' ? No, that is a step too far, if necessary I'll pay by Cheque (remember them ?). I made the mistake of previously allowing a 'continuous credit card payment' to a Broadband company , I will NEVER do that again, it took me 6 months to get it cancelled and numerous phone calls to a call Centre in India (or somwhere ?) where they were ALL called 'Dave' and could barely speak English. *-) Ray
tonyg3nwl Posted August 26, 2011 Author Posted August 26, 2011 Hi Again. I have just made some phone calls to a couple of MMM advertisers for insurance quotes, and it would seem unlikely that I will get a better price than my renewal quotation. One company was £100 higher, and a second was £123 higher,. Annoyingly, having asked for their best price initially, the first company having decilned his price, then promptly 'had a word with the manager' and came back to match my existing renewal quote. Why do they up the anti initially, then suddenly find a way of dropping it by 100... What do they shave off , service in event of trouble perhaps.? Anyway, I will stick for another year, and accept existing renewal quote. regarding auto card payment, this only happens if I dont tell them to cancel by the expiry date of existing policy, this prevents me being uninsured, and I always get a reminder 2 weeks before it is due so have time to cancel or go elsewhere. Thanks for comments. tonyg3nwl
ham Posted August 26, 2011 Posted August 26, 2011 Tony. My first jury service call resulted in me sitting on a case for 4 months. It was a mega insurance Fraud. The guys defence as that he only took what he as entitled to. They brought in experts from Lloyds London to give evidence in defence and prosecution. They argued that 75% of any premium was commission; the broker in Lloyds only got 25% of the premium. So now I do not take any quote given me, I play off one against the other. The big companies do not use Brokers (cut out the middle man) other than those on the Lloyds register the underwriters. When you are offered a cut in the premium they are usually cutting the commission they take or the cover they offer. Holiday firms do the same with their insurance and the holiday package they take a hit to get you signed up
