Camping/Calor Gas in Norway

We are planning an extended trip (6-8 weeks) in Norway - ferries via Denmark, to Stavanger to stay with a nephew then up the coast all the way to Nordkapp, via the Lofoten Islands and back through Finland and Sweden. Will be in our VW Bilbo's Celex. My question is the availability of Camping Gaz/Calor Gas in Norway - looking at the Camping.no website, it suggests that availability of Calor Gas/ Camping Gaz is limited.. We use either Camping Gaz 907 - normally take these to Europe or Calor 3.9kg Propane.

Any advice?

Welcome! :-D

What time of year are you planning to go?

Getting any sort of Butane Gas in Norway can be difficult, Propane is used and is sold in Norwegien bottles.

You might get Camping Gaz at a specialist camping shop but they are few and far between.

Best bet is to take your gas with you.

By the way I have two empty Gaz 907 s for sale £15 each pick up from Worcestershire :-D

You certainly won't find Calor, and in my three trips to Norway I don't remember seeing any Camping Gaz (though the Camping Gaz website indicates that there are a very small number of dealers - insufficient to be of any use if you run out in the back of beyond, and apparently not stocking 907s anyway).

I would suggest you might find it best to take one or two Calor cylinders (greater capacity than the Camping Gaz ones), as your scope for exchanging Camping Gaz looks virtually nil.

What you may find useful is the fact that most Norwegian (and I think Swedish, though I can't clearly recall on that) campsites provide cooking facilites in a kitchen somewhere. (In fact, I think every one I've stayed on did - partially because they also have little camping cabins). They varied quite a lot in facilities, but all had something, though if you go in season, you may have to get your scheduling right to work round other people). We certainly used them to eke out our gas supply when we had a VW van.

Hi,

Some thoughts but bear in mind that we went in 2006.

Oslo Aire: there is an aire for motorhomes by the Yacht Harbour, called Sjølyst/Bestumkilen. Very convenient. It includes water and a sani-station. It’s 6 min. from city centre by bike or a bus stop is 50m away. About £12 per night in 2006.

The marina is signposted from the E6 and the E18. There is a toll to take your vehicle into Oslo – if you reach one of these booths you have passed the aire.

Be aware of the speed limits in Norway (there are many cameras in some areas) the fine is 5500 kr!! I am told that they do chase fines!?! With very few exceptions the maximum speed in Norway is 80kph.

Nord Kapp is owned (like Land’s End!) and getting into its car park and other facilities cost us £18 PER PERSON. This did include two overnights in the car park - we had a gale when there in June.

The tunnel onto the Nord Kapp island was if memory serves about £8 each way – it goes by ‘van length the line being at 6m. Our van is 5.88.

You will have to use ferries throughout Norway and these will severely cut down your average mileage per day. You will need cash for most of the ferries.

All of the Norwegians we met spoke excellent English, we friendly and helpful.

You are by law allowed to camp for one night in Norway provided you’re (from memory) 100 metres from the nearest habitation. We found it fairly easy to wild camp once above Bergen. Some campsites will let you ‘dump and fill’ without having to stay overnight (about £5 in 2006) – these sites are usually signed from the road. Also some garages have dump and fill facilities – again signed from the road – sometimes free but usually a couple of pound or so.

With regard to your main question. I know that Calor gas is unobtainable in Norway – we took four Camping Gaz bottles which were sufficient. Sorry but I cannot remember if Gaz is readily available in Norway.

We contacted Joyce and Gordon Pearce – the MMM Consultants for Scandinavia - for more useful information.

We had a wonderful trip. Watching the sun moving across the sky without setting at 3am is surreal. We missed out the Lofoten Islands so maybe.....

Cattwg :-D
