nightrider Posted September 28, 2011 Posted September 28, 2011 My cousin has a 2.5 turbo charged VW motorhome and by all accounts the turbo charger is not kicking in, he took it to his local repair shop where they hooked it up to the computer and everything was in working order. They took it out on a road test and confirmed that the TC was not working, they suspect it could be something to do with the exhaust mainifold pipe or could it be something wrong with the catalytic converter?? any idea's.
thebishbus Posted September 29, 2011 Posted September 29, 2011 Sorry, I do not know why it is not working, but would suspect something like a seized shaft bearing or jammed impeller. One way to check if it is working, is to squeeze the rubber outlet hose, and rev the engine,if it is working, you can feel the hose expand with the air pressure. Brian B. ps another possibility could be a split or disconnected hose.

It may depend on what "the TC is not working" actually means. Certain VWs have a variable-geometry turbo-charger (TC) and if the operating mechanism of this type of TC sticks in the 'off-boost' position (as is far from uncommon), the motor's power will be drastically reduced. See: http://www.turbotechnics.com/news/vnt_clean.htm However, this down-on-power scenario would be quite different to one when the TC is genuinely not functioning at all (ie. it's not rotating) and there are (apparently) no symptoms (like masses of black smoke) to suggest the reason for this. If your cousin's local repair shop is guessing at the cause of the problem, then I suggest that the vehicle be taken to a VW main agent or specialist.

The garage my cousin uses is a general car repair shop, they said that they would use a process of elimination to find out what is wrong????? I told him to take it to a diesel specialist, looks like it might be a costly job?
aultymer Posted September 29, 2011 Posted September 29, 2011 "a process of elimination to find out what is wrong" ie, they will keep guessing with your cousin paying for parts he does not need until they, perhaps, stumble on the right bit! So, the choice is try some changes and hope they find the problem before the money runs out ! Or, go to a main dealer and pay for a diagnosis - if the resulting quote is too much, then he can still drive away.
andy mccord Posted September 29, 2011 Posted September 29, 2011 The most common reason for what appears to be a non working turbo is a leak of air between the compressor outlet and the engine, usually you can clearly hear it on throttle. Regards Andy

Quite possibly a sticking turbo waste gate which is a symptom of 'sleepy van syndrome' - when vans aren't used much, the waste gate sticks so the turbo gets back-pressure and doesn't kick in, so no turbo power and a sluggish van. This is what we had on a previous van we were buying and the chap we got it from had it fixed (freed-up) at his local garage for £25.
