Has anyone any experience of using Caravanguard Breakdown insurance? I have to renew my insurance and wish to know whether to purchase the overseas cover or go with Red Pennant when we go abroad next?

Thank you :-D

We're with Safeguard which gives European breakdown cover as standard and is quite comprehensive. We've never had to use it fortunately. :-D

We've found having the insurance and breakdown cover in one policy keeps the cost very competitive ... if you get a better quote make sure you go back to them as they will normally match it.

For the last 2 years we've won a '£50 discount voucher' on the 'Spin and Win' wheel thing which was great! :->

We've been with Caravan Guard for 5 years, and always found them competative. We had an accident two years ago in Scotland. They arranged for us to be towed home (To Portsmouth), and were very quick to do so, as it was a Saturday afternoon We have overseas cover which I think is standard. They arranged for the vehicle to be taken to a garage for repair, and have been very helpful. I would recommend them

Thank you all for your input.

One is always looking to save money, so will go with the option of having overseas breakdown cover instead of the Red Pennant option.

Our van insurance is due soon too and Safeguard want £343 this year, much about the same as the last two years. That includes cover for use and breakdown anywhere in Europe.

Not all insurers will but Safeguard will also cover other countries outside Western Europe if you ask - like Morocco for which the extra was modest - about £16 for a month I seem to recall from two years ago.

In the past I got other lower (and higher - but we don't mention those do we!) quotes and phoned Safeguard and both times they without hesitation gave me a £50 cash back which redressed the imbalance nicely - so I'll do the same again this year and see what happens.

Caravanguard, Safeguard, Saga and Comfort seem to be the major players with whom most people seem content and whilst there are many others to choose from I think those 4 should be enough to get a representative figure.

I'm not looking for cheap as peace of mind is paramount but there is little point in paying more than you have to!

I have used Caravan guard breakdown cover twice. Both in the UK and France. Each time they dealt with me efficiently and quickly and the breakdown companies mechanics arrived when they said.

Have never been able to fault Caravanguard and have always been with them.

We had cause to use the Safeguard breakdown via the AA in France this yaer when we had some brake problems and I was unimpressed with both the cost of mobile phone calls to the French call centre (over £12 for two short calls!) and with the mechanic they sent.

All I asked for was the address of the nearest Peugeot garage to Briare but they could not tell me and they sent a heavy recovery truck who escorted me the 2 km to the garage. If I had known it was that close I would not have bothered as the van was driveable safely.

As a word of warning - do try and avoid having any work done in France as it is bloody expensive!

To replace rear brake linings and slave cylinders on both back wheels cost me 740 Euros. Gulp!!

However to their credit they did it on the spot and from entering the workshop to leaving was about 4 hours which included waiting for the parts to arrive from Montargis and the customary French lunch break of two hours which I thought was impressive - apart from the cost!!

We have used Safeguard for the last 11 years always very good price. Also used the breakdown cover, as Richad says phone calls via your Mobile are expensive we were lucky and able to use a French phone. As for Green card cover we used it last year for Croatia and this year for Morocco at no extra charge.

We had the gear lever on our Fiat motorhome come out in Buxton and phoned CaravanGuard. Their mechanic was with us in 90 minutes and kept in touch on the way by mobile phone. He quickly fixed the problem and we were on our way within 2 hours, excellent service. The only problem was with varaible reception on our mobile phone but that was not CaravanGuard's fault.
