Before renewing the m/home breakdown ins with Saga in Feb, I will check the small print. As I posted (elsewhere?) Saga now own RAC which I happen to have some cover with through my bank. However, they have offered me a good deal for European breakdown which covers £300 repairs too and can be changed from my car (which I am using for the next journey) to the m/home for the summer. Saga themselves refuse to transfer the m/home Euro cover to the car.

Apologies - Saga own the AA, not the RAC.

SAGA don't you just love em. Had a quote in today for renewing our house hold policy. Gone up 35% which seemed a bit much. Phoned em up and told the nice lady that I had better quotes and told her what the best one was (I lied). Nice lady gave me a loyalty bonus (I think she fell for my blue eyes) which meant they were just below the figure I had given em so I renewed. I did try pointing that the competitive quote included a free gift but I lucked out there. So there you have it I still love em.

Mind you from what other members of my family have told me this seems to work with most insurance companies.

Nearly right, but neither owns the other. They are sister operating companies, both owned by the same holding Company, Acromas Holdings.

That same holding Company also owns the British School of Motoring.

One other notable member of the Acromas Holdings group is Metro Mail - a massive direct mail business based in County Durham, which I suspect helps to explain why you'll be deluged with junk mail if you give your details to any one of the other Companies in their Group.

It should be remembered that Saga is NOT some sort of cuddly social service or club for over 50's.

It is a hard-nosed (and very successful) private sector, profit-maximising business.

Its insurance products are of course also not only open to the over 50's; it is simply that they focus all their marketing and advertising at that group of people, with the pretence that by taking out some product with them you are joining some sort of "club".

Very clever and very successful niche-marketing of a growing collection of complimentary products to a discrete (and rapidly growing) specific demographic, which grew out of the Group founder designing specialist package holidays to his hotel in Folkstone for retired people in the 1950's.
