Petrol + 12p = Diesel?

When ever possible I return to Mid Wales with as full a tank as I can. That way I avoid additional 5p/ltr we have to pay in this area but this time on my return from the South of England I was amazed to see three garages in a row charging 12p more for diesel than petrol.

Did I miss something on fuel duty in the Autumn Statement?

I see the same thing - I think it is just rural areas getting a bum deal - AGAIN!

My tow truck is dual fuel - LPG and petrol - Local Garage has LPG at 82.9p/L but out into the "wilds" of Dorset last week I paid 86.9/l - so I put the minimum in to get me to a cheaper garage

A few days before I filled up at Fleet Services on the M3 and they, A motorway services!, was charging 76.9/l and when I was in Twickenham it was advertised for sale at 72.9p/L

So for me, I get a tad hacked off at finding a 14p/litre differential for the same fuel type :-S

Our nearest LPG is in Welshpool with only two others within 30 miles (that I have found) and all at 79.9p, All three are independent so I suspect they have no way of negotiating a deal and that 79.9 gives them what they expect as a standard margin.

The other thing is that our two supermarkets are sometimes more expensive than the BP garage. Tesco make me laugh when they offer 5p off, I can get that any time when I am out of the area.

I have also noticed that ASDA are generally cheaper across the board. Where I live there are 2 Tesco's, 3 independents, 1 Shell and 1 BP all within 3 mile of the nearest Tesco. The Shell & BP are normally 1p more than Tesco, the 3independents are the same as Tesco. Tesco offer 5p a Ltr off if you spend £50 in the store.

A few months ago one of the independents knocked 5p a Ltr of petrol & Diesel, this lasted very briefly (about 2 days) On my local forum the news spread fast. When the price went back up there was a lot of questions why, someone who worked in one of the independents came onto the forum and said they had been told by T***o that they would drop their prices so low and for as long as it takes, that it would put them out of business and that was the reason why they had to revert back to the old price. The owner of the garage was not bothered to much because he was receiving more income with the higher price that he was having to charge.

This was put on the forum by someone who said they worked for the Garage so don't know if it is genuine, but I do know that the price drop for 2 days was genuine because I filled up there.

Diesel has always been more expensive than unleaded due to the tax regime and the higher cost to make, but I admit the spread seems to have widened recently. Here in Edinburgh unleaded is £1.29 per litre while diesel is £1.38

Not true, not many years ago when the market was dominated by petrol driven vehicles diesel was cheaper than petrol, this had been the way for years. However with the advent of both the government and vehicle manufactures propaganda of the savings and benefits of using a diesel powered vehicle we changed.

I’m sure you are all aware that North Sea Oil is what they term Light crude oil. This means we can make petrol from our North Sea Oil but NOT diesel. For this we need heavy crude which we have to import from the likes of the Middle East.

In a nut shell we were duped again.

It's more simple than that!

Supply and demand rules apply.

There is an over availability of petrol refining in Europe and a shortfall of diesel refining.

Add to that the seasonal demand for the very similar to diesl heating oil and - voila - the refiners can charge more for it - so they do - wouldn't you?

It's cheaper in Mainland Europe due to VAT and duty regimes being more diesel friendly and more petrol unfriendly

Here in Eastbourne area the differential is mostly 9p per litre, even at Asda, and smaller garages are 10p higher.Asda certianly do keep their pricies at the bottom of the table, but often Tesco (not a mile away from them) are 2 or 3p more expensive.

I gues Diesel is still cheaper than petrol in France, and indeed cheaper then here even taking into account a poor exchange rate!
