Interesting point Bruce.

Does anyone really believe that not knowing the entire National Anthem off by heart makes anyone unpatriotic?

Of course I know it.

"1. O Flower of Scotland,

When will we see your like again

That fought and died for

Your wee bit hill and glen.

And stood against him,

Proud Edward's army,

And sent him homeward

To think again.

2. The hills are bare now,

And autumn leaves lie thick and still

O'er land that is lost now,

Which those so dearly held

That stood against him,

Proud Edward's army

And sent him homeward

To think again.

3. Those days are past now

And in the past they must remain

But we can still rise now

And be the nation again!

That stood against him

Proud Edward's army

And sent him homeward

To think again.

4. O Flower of Scotland,

When will we see your like again

That fought and died for

Your wee bit hill and glen.

And stood against him,

Proud Edward's army,

And sent him homeward

To think again.

Wrth gwrs!

Mae hen wlad fy nhadau yn annwyl i mi,

Gwlad beirdd a chantorion, enwogion o fri;

Ei gwrol ryfelwyr, gwladgarwyr tra mâd,

Tros ryddid gollasant eu gwaed.

Cytgan:

Gwlad, Gwlad, pleidiol wyf i'm gwlad,

Tra môr yn fur i'r bur hoff bau,

O bydded i'r heniaith barhau.

Hen Gymru fynyddig, paradwys y bardd,

Pob dyffryn, pob clogwyn, i'm golwg sydd hardd;

Trwy deimlad gwladgarol, mor swynol yw si

Ei nentydd, afonydd, i mi.

Cytgan

Os treisiodd y gelyn fy ngwlad dan ei droed,

Mae hen iaith y Cymry mor fyw ag erioed,

Ni luddiwyd yr awen gan erchyll law brad,

Na thelyn berseiniol fy ngwlad.

Cytgan

And did those feet in ancient time.

Walk upon England's mountains green:

And was the holy Lamb of God,

On England's pleasant pastures seen!

And did the Countenance Divine,

Shine forth upon our clouded hills?

And was Jerusalem builded here,

Among these dark Satanic Mills?

Bring me my Bow of burning gold;

Bring me my Arrows of desire:

Bring me my Spear: O clouds unfold!

Bring me my Chariot of fire!

I will not cease from Mental Fight,

Nor shall my Sword sleep in my hand:

Till we have built Jerusalem,

In England's green & pleasant Land

A very good poem.

But a rabid socialist rant at the Establishment nonetheless.

Are you aware that it was penned as a massive critique of the exploitation of the poor by the economic elite?

I'm astonished that English landed Gentry would be espousing it!

Times have moved on BGD and when sung in the upper house, obviously when in our cups, it stirs the heart strings and our senses of loyalty and patriotism :-)

For all My Gripes and Moans about this Country (and they are often and many),   No matter who,s in Power, I took and still Hold the Queens Shilling, for which I will always Honour my Allegiance / Commitment to this UNITED Country and lay down my Life if Called upon to do so,  as Long as these old bones will allow me. I dont need an Anthem/verse or Poem  for that.

I would fight for this country .

what that means is that you would fight for this Government.

Peter,

My country comes first, you can't say I'm not fighting because i dont agree with the political party that is in power can you, if we were under attack no matter what party was in they would have to fight off the invaders wouldnt they?
