Food Storeing

Thought about this food storeing thing a little more and have decided to take it seriously.

I have a family member who requires extra, extra, care so no risks can be taken.

I think the Euro may not collapse but probably it will suffer some major blow and feel that some major banks may fall on their own greedy swords as a result. Predicting which ones in the UK is difficult but Barclays has to be one candidate.

I feel that this will cause a lot of periferal problems as yet unknown but access to money could be denied to many for a start. Maybe store and supermarkets supplies will be disrupted, who knows.

Our government obviously think that something serious is posibly going to happen soon so it is making plans to bring home the expats because access to their money will be denied which signals to me a banking collapse in Europe

A biggest natural disaster for us ourselves here would probably be any one, or a combination of, electricity off, gas off, water off, shops closed, access to money denied

The Plan

Assuming gas and electricity off then we would bring the caravan out of storage to our home and move into it, easy to keep warm and lit. Plenty of gas and solar panels, TV and micrwave

Assuming only shops closed and money acess denied then we could stay in our home and our food/water stocks should see us through for about three months, dust should have well settled by then.

Storeing mostly dried and tinned foods but some frozen foods as we have a small generator if required.

So no real extra costs other than three or four bottles of gas being stored at a cost of £14 per bottle and three/four gallons of petrol

That's it, plans made, you may now call me stupid and tell me that I am totally wrong as much as you wish but that is what I am going to do because, say about a £100 outlay plus food, that we will eventually eat anyway, seems a cheap safety net to me.

B-) B-) B-)

Just a thought

Maybe I should store large amounts of tinned food and black market it when the time comes :D :D :D

Given that we have plenty of storage space my wife shops on the basis of buying vast quantities (calculated on the basis of usage and the products use by date) of any of the products we use when genuine special offers are on. Six months is not unusual and even a year for products with long storage potential. Any products that are free in season such as blackberries from our own bushes are frozen and fruit from the orchard is either turned into chutney or jam. Cooking apples are cooked and frozen in tubs for use in pies or crumbles during the Winter.

We should be OK then.

Colin,

you fool you, letting everyone know that you are a wealthy man, at this moment hoards of poverty stricken motor homers are sussing out where you live to relieve you of your weallth, silly boy.

... if there's a power failure I know where there's gonna be a load of grub being given away!!!! :->

Sorry Mel but we do get a lot of power cuts out here where we live so we have a generator and sufficient petrol to run it for three days. Given that the supplier is obliged to pay fixed levels of compensation for power cuts lasting more than as I remember it 21 hours even if you have suffered no loss or inconvenience we have done quite well out of power cuts in the past.

Just a tip for anyone planning to store petrol for any length of time you will need to add a fuel extender to stop it going off. Most good garden machinery outlets and ship chandelers will stock it if needed.
