Not sports fanatics so we didn't watch it, but I am surprised that there were no women in the short list - but don't ask me to suggest any as I have no idea - maybe it was an all male judging panel who concocted the short list?

Three golfers, two athletes, two cricketers, one boxer, one tennis and one rugby - all male - why?

I am a sports fanatic and watched it all, cannot remember the rugby player though, perhaps you can enlighten me Rich. Why all male, well perhaps it was because all the major achievments this year were by men. Could have put the token woman in but the BBC realised their mistake so, as usual, over compensated by having all women lists in the junior section and mostly women presenting the awards. Agree with Mark Cavendish getting the top award though, what an achievment in what until now has always been a largely unrecognised sport in the UK.

Yes - well done to him a great honour.

I have to say though that I found the whole programme quite tedious. I do not think it is fair that Sports Journalists choose the shortlist. It really should be BBC licence payers and this would probably redress the male/female balance we saw this year and maybe throw up a few oddballs. Remember Eddie the Eagle ? 8-)

The highlight for me personally was the Life Time achievement award to Sir Steve Redgrave - but there again I would show a bias - my daughter works at the Leander Club in Henley-on-Thames! :D

Come on Jeremy, what was wrong with Eddie the eagle. Only competitor I ever saw who got a standing ovation from the crowd before he did anything.

I thought it was 'Sports personality' of the year not an 'achiever award'?

I'm not decrying his achievement in any way but 'personality'?......am I missing something?

Hi Roger

I think the 'personality' part went out of the window many years ago. I beleive Nigel Mansell won it some years ago. Surley the pet furry slug that he keeps on his top lip has miles more 'personality' than him !

The main problem with the nominations particually this years is the low profile of female sports. In the Uk we have many world ranked and world beating female sports people but the press / TV / sponsers do not seem to give them anywhere near the coverage or backing of their male equals.

Maybe also in years to come only one nomination from each sport ? Borred with lots of people from the same sport that happens to be 'high profile ' that year.

:-S
