Continental motorway recovery

As far as I'm aware, all motor insurance policies that include cover for breakdown/recovery abroad will refund charges incurred if you need to have your vehicle recovered from a French motorway (which is what the MMM letter (page 15) referred to).

The letter-writer asked "I wonder if I am the only one who did not know?"

My own Insurance policy (supplied via Comfort Insurance) includes a section "Breakdown on Continental motorways" that details what one should do if that happens, and I would expect this to be the case for policies from other providers.

The scenario is also adequately described in the "Breakdown Service" section of the Country Introduction (France) part of the Caravan Club's Sites Guide and Touring Handbook.

These are a couple of links that may be useful:

Not all French autoroutes are toll-roads – for example, the A84 connecting Caen to Rennes, the A20 between Vierzon and Brive-la-Gaillarde, or the A75 from Clermont-Ferrand to Bezier (except for the Millau Bridge).

Although I normally avoid toll autoroutes, I use non-toll autoroutes whenever I get the opportunity (Don’t most people?) I assume the breakdown/recovery regulations are the same whether an autoroute is toll or toll-free.
