Grayson Perry + David Hockney in Jan/Feb

A bit of culture in the New Year...................

The plan is to have a 3 night break in London and take in the Grayson Perry exhibition at The British Museum and the David Hockney exhibition at The Royal Academy on consecutive days; and maybe the London Eye.

The Caravan Club site at Crystal Palace isn't open until March, ( if 2012 is same as 2011) and the GP exhibition ends on 19th Feb, so we have a restricted "window of opportunity). So I'm looking for a site that's convenient for tube or bus trips into central London.

If this sort of trip is something you do on a regular basis, how do you do it?

Any suggestions gratefully considered.

The other option is to take the train from Newark and try to do two exhibitions in one day!! Not a very relaxed option.

I fancy the van option, but the choice will come down to cost.

Regards

As you mention the CC, and Crystal Palace, I assume you are a member and your 'van is LEZ compliant.

If so Abbey Wood (open All Year) is a decent choice. A travelcard bought at the railway station (10 mins walk away) will get you in to London, and also cover Tube and Buses for the day, at relatively little cost. (it was around £7 last time I was there).

(same card will get you into London by a combination of bus, tube, and or Docklands Light Railway if you want a slower, but "sightseeing" trip).

Transport runs early to very late.

Not a place to want to go out locally in the evening (I'm not particularly worried about safety, simply nothing much of interest around - you'll probably be in Central London anyway), but a bus ride from just outside the gates to, say, Greenwich is easy.

Nice site, and relatively easy to get to from Newark on A1, M11, M25.

Thanks "Robinhood"

Abbey Wood + a Travelcard sounds like it ought to be a more practical option than a train from Newark.

Local public transport options are always the unknown, and easy when you know; we'll do the sums

thanks

Abbey Wood is just in LT Zone 4.

A Zone 1-4 Travelcard is now £7.70 (as long as your first journey is after 09:30 - £10-60 if not) and is valid all day in those zones on trains, LT buses, Tube and the DLR (and for journeys starting up to 04:30 the next day if you're planning a night on the town ;-) ).

It's approx 30 mins by train to London, but a bus to Greenwich, and then DLR in via Canary Wharf is a slower but more interesting experience.

We've used Abbey Wood a few times for shows and general sightseeing.

So much good info!

Not only does it look feasible with the van, but we've also spotted a Don McCullin exhibition at The Imperial War Museum.

Until my son asked if he could take it back to his house after Xmas, we had a poster from The Side Gallery in Newcastle featuring a McCullin classic; shellshocked US marine, I think.

Looks like a good start to 2012
