Vehicals over 10 years old are no longer serviced in France

With a slipping fanbelt i limped into a garage only to be told i was to old 8-)

 

Went to another main dealer in Lyon again "to old" they said they will no longer service vehicals older than 10 years old

 

Im now limping into the hills of central France where more tractors are found that cars *-) There i know i will find service

 

I have parts with me including a fan belt which seems to be a bit to big? *-)

 

I was shocked the reason only new vehicals are wanted is the garage charge is between 60€ and 140€ an hour but the work time is given by the manufacturer:This morning a garage i know well (renault) said disc blocks can be changed in quarter of an hour but the listed charge is 1hr30mins and the mechanic gets a small bonus

 

In the hills and mountains the hourly rate is between 28€ and 35€ per hour and "old" vehicals the norm

 

Hope my fan belt gets there it sound dreadful as i set off,once going its ok?I hope

 

Be warned you might have a non old campingvehical but it might cost a fortune to make a repair during this period of economic hardship

Dunno if this will help:

 

Changing a "fan belt" is a piece of cake for any competent DIY mechanic.

It's usually a 5 minute job.

If you have the new one, then maybe you could either pop into any vehicle mechanics garage/workshop that you pass, or into any Feu Vert (sort of French version of Kwik Fit), or even ask around on any campsite for someone who'd do it for you for a beer or two.....

The way the economic climate is going, everyone will be driving vehicles over 10 years old soon, as the price of 'new' spirals away out of reach.

Where that leaves 'The Green Agenda' I don't know, as City after City slaps on 'polution control measures' and fines for not complying. A 'Rock and a Hard Place' comes to mind.

Already 'London Owners' of 'Older' Motorhomes are having their rights 'Trodden On' by these 'New' Laws. A vehicle properly maintained and running 'as it was designed' should never be made illegal by retrospective legislation, a change to 'newly manufactured' of Course, but retrospective law assumes any vehicle over ten years old is an 'Old Banger' and they are NOT.

Never ASSUME, It makes an ASS out of U and ME, or in this case it makes the Law look an Ass.

If the belt is slipping it may only need adjustment to cure it. Do be aware though that tightening an old belt can often lead to it snapping which is a lot worse than it slipping. That said, sooner or later a slipping belt will have had enoughof the extra friction and heat and will fail so it really needs sorting whilst you are close to civilisation rather than in the middle of nowhere - or worse - on a busy main road.

 

If you have the engine number any Renault dealer should be able to look up on a micro fiche or computer and tell you what size belt you need which will include the V angle, unless it is flat with ridges or grooves as well as width and length.

 

If you want people to help you from the UK you will need to tell them the make, model, year, engine type, and size as nobody is able to second guess from what you have told us so far.

 

One of the best ways to secure reliability is breakdown cover - do you not have this as they would probably be able to source a belt for you if you gave them the correct details.

From your posts I sometimes get the impression that you may be French so if your van is French registered and insured it should have breakdown insurance included by law. In the Auvergne if you find a small garage you will get the job done quite cheaply but the parts may be dearer in France than in England.

Your spare at 1030 is correct and the packaging and belt are just alternative numbers.

HAVE YOU ACTUALLY TRIED FITTING your spare.

OK, got you now... you need a slighty shorter one than 1030, where the heck has 1130 come from on the other thread......so confusing!!!!!! ( As always)

Here is a 10 x 1000 belt, so is 25mm shorter.

 

Any parts pl;ace selling V belts shoudl have a catalogue and can look up the sizes of a belt in te hcross reference section..... Not sure why a mountain is being made of this!!!!!!

Try taking the existing belt to an industrial transmission supplier such as BSL or Wyco they will find a match for yours or a little shorter if you want. They are very knowledgeable and usually happy to deal direct to the public and they dont charge a premium like garages do.

Limped into a typical village garage in the middle of the Auverne last year with a failed Exhaust system, trailing on the road. Vehicle is a 1993 Fiat Ducato..........No problem says kind man, park up on the 'municipal' and come back tomorrow morning.............. somewhat poorer we set off the next afternoon complete with a new system. The point is that there are lots of older vehicles especially in the sticks and I would have thought that your Renault Traffic from circa 1983 would be catered for in the same manner, a site for Spares in France is given here, but similar sites are available in the UK Pieces detachee.

Just use te local Garagiste to obtain and fit the offending belt, :-)

Pastricia -- I'm not as clever as Derek at posting 'links' -- so I won't try, But -- I'm pretty sure that 'Alfiona'

did a tour of France ( and possibly a bit of Spain?) last winter/spring and has re-appeared on these pages only since about Christmas (2011) as happened last year, it seems. Thanks, Derek for the original post about the Eriba Trafic, as all of those chaotic mis-spelled and ungrammatical posts (not a criticism, just descriptive!)now make a lot more sense!

When one must post on route only to find the connection closed before sending i tend to rush :'( Add to that im at this moment in a new media tech which hasnt yet wi fi or cable i must use a French key board

Worse i bought a laptop while in Switzerland whos keyboard isnt British either :-(

 

:-S Then while in New york i bought a super light weight Asus with all mods, solid state which is said to be far faster with less power longer battery :-| Not true my Swiss Toshiba is far better Back to the point the Asus has an AMERICAN keyboard 8-) none are the same

 

Hence bags of errors & emmisions :-S Sorry *-) :-(

 

How anyone can imagin ive several identities i cant imagin? Last year i simply couldnt log in again i tried several times.

 

Last year i remained in France until May i had hoped to return sooner but my campervan remained in a barn on a farm in Essex until November when it moved & remained infront of our kitchen until my parents returned when i was moved to the end of the garden at last escaping on the 4th Jan :-D So there it is B-)

 

I hoped to be in Lisboa by now but forgot my driving licence took to many cloths didnt check the mechanical state;fan belt;and have screeeeched my way accross France;she only screeeches when starting or in slow traffic when she overheats as well as screeeeches

 

I intend to revisit the mountain garages where my fan relay and many other things where repaired last year

 

In the mean time a parts shop is looking for a fan belt 1127 mm long *-)

 

Then theres the matter of a tom tom GPS *-)

I sympathise fully with your problems using different keyboards as I find the same but you do post under different identities. At the moment you have two thread going both under different names unless of course there is another Fiona.

 

Anyway I hope the repair goes well.
