Guest gootler
I'm not sure if the car you want is in this but it's worth a read- might give you a clue of what to look out for. http://www.outandaboutlive.co.uk/news/read.asp?area=caravans&art=
Dinkydot
Are you thinking of buying new or used? The latest citroen picasso, although a capable towcar, has much lower towing limits than a VW passat. The 1.6 Picasso is only capaable of towing a caravan weighing 900kg max and that's the MTPLM of the caravan. The Passat however is much heavier and will therefore be able to pull greater weights. The latest 1.6 petrol engine can tow up to 1300kg. If you opt for the 2.0TDi version the manufacturers towing limit is set at 1800kg although we'd reccommend towing no more than 1400kg (the 85% kerbweight limit). Hope this helps. Ranger
Hi gooner, On the rally field you will notice more VW Passats than Citroen Picassos, overall Citroens are a very popular tow car but not a lot of Picassos seen towing. The best small towcar I ever had was a 1600 Automatic 4X4 petrol Suzuki Vitara JLX SE LWB, even more stable than my old Vauxhall 3000 Senator Automatic, and a BMW 525 Automatic. I always prefer atomatic for towing, gave up towing with a clutch and gear stiring stick about 30 years ago. Just sold my 'Suzi' after 10 years. My mates tell I'm too old to tow now and to stick with my motor home. Next thing they will be telling me to get a horse.

javorb
i have just returned after doing 1300 miles in my brother in laws vw golf estate 130hp tdi 2002,i was towing my sterling europa 540 which is unladen 1125kg ,i was amazed to find while towing i was averaging 35.7 mpg with the aircon on ,this was while driving at a steady 60mpg on motorway, without the van i was returning 60mpg ,this car has one of my tdi tuning units fitted which increases hp/torque by 20-25%,i would not consider the citreon ,i used to tow with my seat alhambra tdi but the golf managed just as well
