Hi,

Hope to go to Berlin next month and would be very interested in any suggestions on campsites or Stelplatz that are near to public transport links into Berlin.

Would also welcome any suggestions on places to visit in Berlin or one the way there or back

Thanks

Brian

We have stayed at two campsites near Berlin, http://www.davidklyne.co.uk/campingpark_sanssouci.htm The owners run a free mini bus to the nearest tram stop for Potsdam for onward travel to Berlin. We have also stayed at this campsite which is on the other side of Berlin http://www.davidklyne.co.uk/Camping_Jagerbude.htm but it could be a bit more difficult with a motorhome as you have to drive to the nearest station which is about 4 miles away but there is a free car park.

Places to visit are numerous but at Potsdam I would suggest Park Sanssouci and in Berlin the 1936 Olympic Stadium, Schloss Charlottenburg and the Reichstag with its Norman Foster dome to name a few.

I lived in my tent in Berlin for about 3 months & I think I stayed in what is now the ACSI site at Gatow :-

I say I think - this was in 1973 while I studied at the University. The wall was still there then & I drove through the Hannover corridor to Berlin in a MkII Spitfire - goodness, I must have been brave then!

It was a lovely spot on Wannsee. As I recall the U-bahn or Oberbahn was quite close?

Of course in nearly 40 years it may have changed a bit 8-)

I've commented on also having stayed at the first site mentioned above before.

Whilst a little way out of Berlin, it is easy to access arriving from the West. The transport system in Potsdam is integrated with that of Berlin, so a single ABC zone travel pass will buy you a day's travel into Berlin and throughout the area you want to visit. It covers bus, train, tram and U-Bahn, and at the moment appears to be €6.80 per day per person.

As David says, there is a minibus from the campsite to the tram, which you catch (with a change of tram) to Potsdam Hbf, and then S-Bahn train into Berlin (all on the travelpass). It is easier than it sounds, though we walked to the tram (with a short cut under the local station underpass at the tram stop near the site). Regular services, and running for extended hours.

The site itself was busy when we were there, (mid August) and as it had been very dry for weeks, was a bit "dusty", but it is well-equipped and pleasantly situated.

You won't find any trouble finding sights to see; Berlin is a fascinating city, and we thought it quite unlike anywhere else we had been (but it IS changing rapidly).

I'd recommend going up the "Fernsehturm" for a panoramic view, and the Reichstag Dome (Britischer Architekt) if it has beeen re-opened to vistors (though the queues were always long with the exception of early or late).

We stayed here in 2010 and were well pleased with it. (link below) Short pleaseant walk into town where you could get the underground to Berlin plus the town itself was nice and well worth a visit.

Just outside the camp there is a bar & takeaway, supermarket and bakers.

You can also get a 'Berlin Card' which gives you all sorts of free entries to museums, trams, trains etc etc and is very reasonable. Best part is the hop on hop off bus tour to get you started and choose what you want to see.

Don't know if the boundry has changed but when we were there it was just outside the Umwalte zone as well. Very easy to find just off the motorway ring road but surprisingly quiet as well.

PS Hamlyn (or Hameln) is well worth a visit en route and they do a free play of the Pied Piper in the park on a Sunday morning with the kids from the town which is well worth seeing also. Small aire down by the river was quiet and safe and nice walk along riverbank to bars etc if you want an evening stroll

I'd highly recommend

http://www.campingland-brandenburg.de/O4-Campingplatz-Am-Liepnitzse.camping_o4.0.html?&L=1

I've stayed on this site each time i've visited Berlin. Situated on the outskirts in the country at Liepnitzsee it's also right by a large lake which is just a short walk from the Campsite. Access to Berlin itself is a simple 15-20 min drive south on the A11 to the clearly marked exit for P&R (Park and Ride) at Pankow. The car park is huge and just a 3 minute walk over the bridge to Pankow S-Bahn station. Typically German and so untypically British.......the car park is totally free for as long as you like!

Take the S-Bahn from Pankow to Unter den Linden and that brings you out right by the Brandenburg Gate.

Berlin is an amazing city and I love walking around there. I've been back three times and hope to visit again this year. The pace of life is so laid back and relaxed and the Berliners are really nice people.

Campsite plus points:

1) Very large site yet extremely peaceful and quiet.

2) Toilet and Shower Block has to be seen to be believed. Shower cubicles are huge and plentiful and the entire block is absolutely immaculate. It would put a 5 star Hotel to shame!

Campsite minus points:

1) There is a small onsite Restaurant serving excellent Breakfasts and meals.......but Ilona the site owner (who speaks fluent english btw) will not serve any cooked meal after 6pm! You can buy a beer, coffee or at a push she might do you a sandwich.....but absolutely nothing cooked after 6pm!

2) If the weather is warm watch out for mosquitoes in the evenings. Last time there I took a very bad bite on my foot which a week later became infected and needed Hospital treatment.
