Which motorhome

60 k to spend, 2 berth, big bathroom. Looking at either a Kontiki 659, Bessacar E540 or a Marquis Worcester. Any else you can suggest? all 3 have an end bathroom but only the Kon Tiki has a fixed bed, but we are concerned about economy on the Kontiki.

We tested a Kontiki 659 last January and we thought it was brilliant. So much space and really a luxury two berth vehicle. The bed was very comfortable and the bathroom was huge. Loads of space everywhere and the storage space inside the van was great but very little outside storage just enough for a couple of chairs and a hook up cable. We travel with a wheelchair and it had to go inside the van. Obviously a few bits fell off, it was British after all. The struts for the front lounge seat jammed and we had to take them off! The table stores under the bed which is quite awkward. It had some really nice touches such as the extra freezer and the small coffee table at the front of the lounge. It was very smooth on the road and had loads of power. We managed 26mpg whilst we had it over 4 days which we did not think was too bad. You need to remember that some sites don't take tag axle vans and it takes up two full parking spaces.

It was so nice our dog would not get out of it when we took it back!!

We ended up buying a new van with an end bathroom (Chausson Welcome 76) and that is brilliant as well.

The Swift Bolero 630EW give the same layout as the Bessacarr E540, just different graphics & fabric.

The Bessacarr E749 is equivelent to the Swift Kon-tiki 659.

 

Also Autotrail Dakota has rear washroom with fixed bed- 2 berth Lo-Line or Super Lo-Line (& overcab double if more berths required in Hi-Line version)

Ok - Devil's Advocate time here: you are gonna spend 60K on a MH, yet you are concerned about the fuel economy of one of the choices?

Really?

 

Unless you're going to be doing Starship mileages, surely the difference between (say) 25 mpg and 30mpg is not really a big deal at all. Do the maths.

If still worried, just drive a bit slower, and your fuel economy will shoot up.

That little extra cost is utterly dwarfed by the massive multi-thousand pound hit you'll take each year in capital depreciation.......course you don't see that until you sell the van though....

Good to see Swift are addressing their well documented build quality issues. 

It's almost as if they expect that we'll assume that £60,000+ will buy something that's been put together with effective quality control.

Yep...... I agree with Bruce as well ;-).............Plus if I had 60k to waste I'd spend 20k on a decent second hand camper..............and have 40k of beer tokens left over :-D

Bruce, there's nothing wrong with keeping an eye on economy. Our pals have a 3 litre Peugeot (on 4,250kg) and we have a 130hp 2.3 on 3,500kg. During the same touring trips, it seemed as tho they were using 50% more fuel than us - I suspect 18-20mpg for them and 28mpg for us.

Purchasers often fund their motorhoming costs from two different sources, part-ex plus savings for the purchase and salary/pension for the running costs, so on smaller incomes it makes sense to be aware of running costs.

 

I take your point about depreciation and its lack of visibility until resale time but this may be the OPs last van and they may be looking for a similarly laid out van to the KonTiki but with a more economic engine. Unfortunately, with a 5,000kg van this can be tricky although the most recent version has the 2.3 150bhp motor as std and can be ordered with auto if reqd.
