pepe63xnotuse Posted April 11, 2012 Posted April 11, 2012 Sorry, asking about other forums is probably not "the done thing" :$ ...but is there anyone here that uses "ukcampsite"? and if so,are you having trouble with it?... For the last couple of days I've found that I can only access/view the "static" parts of the site(..adverts,listings and such like...) and it won't let me access any area of the site which has any,for want of a better word, "interactivity" to it(..campsite search, forum etc)... ...it just keeps bringing up their, "Oops! Sorry! The page can't be displayed" error page... I have contacted them but they reckon their end is fine and it must be something our end.. Anybody techy minded got any ideas?.... Thanks
flicka Posted April 11, 2012 Posted April 11, 2012 Hi Pepe Just had a look on ukcampsite.co.uk Everything working OK for me, so sorry unable to suggest a solution.
pepe63xnotuse Posted April 11, 2012 Author Posted April 11, 2012 Thanks for that... ...I'd just phoned my brother and asked him to check and it's fine for him also....it's most odd! :-S
Robinhood Posted April 11, 2012 Posted April 11, 2012 Clear your DNS cache. .....by no means guaranteed to fix the problem, but a relatively harmless thing to do, and it does fix such 404 problems under certain circumstances. Assuming you're on Windows; (you don't need step 4)
pepe63xnotuse Posted April 12, 2012 Author Posted April 12, 2012 Thanks again for the input everyone... ...strangely,it's working this mornin'....!? *-)
Caddies104 Posted April 12, 2012 Posted April 12, 2012 Robinhood - 2012-04-11 9:38 PM Clear your DNS cache. .....by no means guaranteed to fix the problem, but a relatively harmless thing to do, and it does fix such 404 problems under certain circumstances. Assuming you're on Windows; (you don't need step 4) RH What next when the command says "the requested operation requires elevation" Pc always slow so thought give your advice a try, but above statement comes back? Not to worry if not known.... (!) Done it, had to right click under command prompt and click on run as administrator, then follow what you said... Thanks, will now see if it works
pepe63xnotuse Posted April 12, 2012 Author Posted April 12, 2012 Oh!..I spoke too soon...it's gone again...?! :-S ..although I haven't yet tried RobinH's tip about clearing the DNS cache.. (..what ever that is? (lol) )
Robinhood Posted April 12, 2012 Posted April 12, 2012 pepe63 - 2012-04-12 11:09 AM Oh!..I spoke too soon...it's gone again...?! :-S ..although I haven't yet tried RobinH's tip about clearing the DNS cache.. (..what ever that is? (lol) ) ...a quick browse for an explanation that doesn't require me to type it all out is at: http://compnetworking.about.com/od/dns_domainnamesystem/f/what-is-a-dns-cache.htm Your computer stores a database of frequently used URLs (page identifiers) and their translated IP address (the way the access is carried out over the internet). To speed access, it will look in there first to see if it can determine an IP address to use for a page, and if it finds it, use it. (If it can't, it has to put a request out over the web). It is possible for this database to get corrupted, or for the IP address for the page to change in the interim - which will result in the requested page not being found. "Flushing" it clears the "local" database out, and a new one is then built - the effects detailed above then hopefully disappearing. Over time, the database is refreshed anyway with newly used data, so any "bad" effects can/will disappear naturally (given time), and the whole process will remain transparent. There is a window, however, within which the problems you detail may be experienced. It isn't, by any means, the only thing that can cause that problem, but it is easy (and non-destructive) to do the "flush" and eliminate it as a cause. (if it's come back, I'd suspect an ISP rpoblem more). It is quite possible that similar DNS (or even page) cacheing within a particular ISP's system, or changes not yet propagated through the wider DNS can cause issues as well, that wouldn't be experienced by people using other ISPs (or other DNS servers). As Caddies has noted, if you aren't logged on via an account with administrator privileges, the command prompt needs to be right-clicked and elevated. ....geek mode off ;-)
pepe63xnotuse Posted April 12, 2012 Author Posted April 12, 2012 Thanks for that Robin'... ;-) I've just given it a go(..and restarted everything)but unfortunately it didn't cure the "issue"..it still brings up "their" error page..:-S (..which shows this,in the address bar: http://www.ukcampsite.co.uk/500error.asp?err=1 ) ..does that help in pointing to anything more specific..? :-S
Robinhood Posted April 12, 2012 Posted April 12, 2012 ....rather too many possibilities to walk through remotely, I'm afraid. :-S It may be that you have (inadvertantly) changed some of the security setting of your browser. If I set mine to block most things (scripting, ActiveX, etc) the search fails, but it simply refreshes with a blank search page, not the page you're experiencing.
pepe63xnotuse Posted April 12, 2012 Author Posted April 12, 2012 Never mind..thanks for your time with this... ;-)
