Parking in Scarborough

The public roads belong to us, we pay for their maintenance through vehicle taxes, and its hardly cheap.

(I understand our vehicle taxes are the highest in Europe, for the most congested roads in Europe.)

I don't see why we should pay any more to park on our public roads anywhere in Britain.

Local roads are paid for out of council tax therefore you and your fellow residents pay for the roads and the local bisnesses pay that bit extra, but the issue seems to be those inconsiderate MH's who camp in car parks and on road then dump waste tanks in road and toilets down the storm drains. Not sure if I can ever remember going to Scarborough, but if there is MH parking it's a step up from a lot of places, was in Dorset/Devon last week and in many towns it was a right pain finding parking for the van.

What a pity some enterprising sole with a wheelchair user and adapted van could not take on the whole issue of height barriers, and other petty prohibitions under human rights, or anti-discrimination legislation. I personally avoid doing UK as it is largely just a load of hassle, and becoming more so day by day with these numpties coming up with petty rules all the time. Mind you passed through Scarborough once, which from what we saw seemed like the best idea. :-S

Long distance lorry drivers however.... leave the place in a terrible state. And THEY really spend nothing in the local community.

When people are treated like scum they tend to behave like it.

They may spend nothing in the local community but they certainly pay more than their share of the roads budget in vehicle taxes.

Local roads are paid for out of council tax/QUOTE]

Only partly. The rest comes from the government who will have collected many times that amount in vehicle taxes. In the case of the Marine Drive, where a vast amount of money has recently been spent on sea defences and a new raised road surface, I understand some also came from the EEC. (We could get far more in EEC grants if the British Government would invest in the infrastructure and did not insist on privatising everything.) That is what inspired my comment of 'its theirs when it wants paying for, so its theirs when they want to park on it.

I had many happy hols at Scarborough in my youth but it has deteriated over the years so we dont go anymore even for the day, it is only 1 1/2 hour drive away.

We go to Whitby which I would recommend to anyone who enjoys the coast, it has something for everyone and there is o/night motorhome parking on the West Cliff (3 spaces) and you can park on the cliff road during the day as quite a few MHs do.. I have never stopped overninght as it is less than an hour drive away but it is really nice to sit and enjoy the view out to sea and down the coast and a walk down to the harbour and up to the Abbey.

If you prefer somewhere less comercialised Sandsend is only a couple of miles up the coast and there is loads of beach side parking which frequented by a number of surfer vans and families enjoying the fantastic beach.

As Whitby comes under the larger Scarborough area I trust this is not going to change,

Had a fantastic weekend in Whitby last year. There is a campsite within easy walking distance of the harbour. The town seems much busier than it did when we had a boat there in the 80s, but it has lost none of its charms.

And dogs are allowed on the beach - and yes I am aware of the problem with dogs fouling the beach bt I am a responsible dog owner. In fact, whitby is very dog friendly.

One word of caution is that I got mugged in the town centre in broad daylight - much to the shock of the people around me. The culprit got away too... with my ice cream - darned seagulls!

With a councils attitude like that no wonder we all go across the channel at every opportunity.

New regional laws in Belgium now require councils to supply Motorhome parking. Wishful thinking for England.

I have seen photos of the Belgian Prime Minister hooking up his car to his caravan to go and spend his holidays on a campsite and Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands riding a bike down to a supermarket in the Hague to do her shopping. Imagine Her Unelected Majesty The Queen doing that!

Maybe it would help if MMM ran a survey .How many of us go over water in our vans,How many stay in UK only .

If they contacted the ferry and Tunnel operators they might provide figures on how many Motor homes they carry in a year. Then perhaps these figures could be provided to Minister of Transport for his/her comments as to why UK is so unfriendly to Motorhomes

Peter, no-one has treated them like scum, they have a large free car park to stay overnight in, but they treated the place as a public toilet, at least the Motorhomers use their Cassette Toilets, a bit of grey water is no problem, compared to what we get. Just because they are professional drivers does not give them 'Carte Blanche' to do as they like. Sorry for 'Wandering off track' we don't live in Scarborough. Just want to be able to visit AND park during the day in our Motorhome. Is that to still be possible ? Ray

Even better if they can segregate the numbers & show the massive difference between UK Motorhomes going "continental" & Continental Motorhome coming to visit the UK.

When ever we have used Ferry or Eurotunnel, we have never seen more than an odd Eurpean Registration Plate, either way.

Have always thought the same, but perhaps those that do only ever make Dover, see what a dump the UK is, and turn back and tell their mates not to bother, and who could blame them. We live in a country filled with petty minded officialdom, intimidating notices everywhere, main roads that resemble open rubbish dumping grounds, hugely expensive "camping", highest fuel costs, exorbitant charges to go visit anywhere, height barriers, no civic pride, and feral kids running wild. To be honest I'm amazed anyone visits cesspit UK PLC. my heart always sinks the moment I'm off the ferry. :-(

Yes, I guess there are some unpleasant people behind the wheel of every type of vehicle.

I was only thinking if anybody thinks its difficiult finding overnight parking for a motorhome in England they should try looking for overnight parking with a 44 ton artic, an electronic tachograph recording every minute you are driving, and the necessity to drive the maximum amount of hours without going over, then not move an inch for the 11 hours you have to park up.

As for using the car park as a toilet thats inexcusable. They don't have a space for a chemical toilet. When I got desperate I used a bucket with a plastic bag inside, tied up the top, and put it in the dog waste bin.

It hurts to admit it Eric, but that's a pretty good summary. I reckon a combination of insidious bleeding-heart liberalisation and plain idiocy are at the root of most of it. We are at the mercy of the fat-cats at the top and the parasitic scum at the bottom. If you are reasonable and decent, you absolutely will be penalised.

Slow hand clap to our bickering political masters.

Completely understand and sympathise with the stresses of trucking but there's room for a porta-potti in any Tramper's cab.

Scarborough is full of most of what 1foot describes anyway and being unable to visit will actually avoid disappointment. See it as a good public service.

maybe for those who keep the same truck all the time, but some don't know which truck they will have till they get to work. So they need to take everything out of the cab every time they return to the depot, in case somebody else is out with it when they return to do another shift. Imagine doing that with your motorhome. Bad enough with bedding, spare clothes, etc etc without carrying a portapotty to work and taking it home again every day.

In the long distance past I used to be a wagon driver, in those days transport cafes were everywhere with huge car parks to overnight at, and you were never far away from a public toilet. Fast forward to today, hardly any transport cafes, and most councils are closing the bogs, looks like the only option left for these guys is a s*h*i*tbox.

That is a pretty impressive piece of kit. Although I think I'd go for a 'double bagger'.........for safety's sake you understand.

Came on tunnel crossing last night , in our train alone 8 MH's mostly UK a couple from Belgium. End of school holls though so it makes a difference I'm sure.

Born in Brid and lived around there 20 years, family all still around that area, Brid was always known as the dump but Scarborough and Filey use to be the place the locals headed for a day out. Sad to hear that Scarborough has gone same way. I know my mum and sisters head to Reighton gap , can't remember how tha's spelt now. *-)

So was I and remember those days too. I stayed everywhere from a top hotel on Princes Street in Edinburgh, to a rat invested Liverpool doss house. Last time I drove a lorry they still had analogue tachographs (discs) you could short out to drive on to a more suitable overnight spot whilst the tachograph was showing the lorry was stationary. I don't know if they can do that with the new electronic card ones they have now.

The sh*t box looks a good idea. But I always managed with an ordinary plastic bucket and pedal bin liner. The plastic bucket was a good second line of defence if the bin liner leaked. Then put the bin liner in a carrier bag as second line of defence. I cannot think of a more hygenic toilet than that.

Have you had your breakfast yet Victor ;-)

Most of the truck drivers that stay at Fishguard, to catch the 01.30am ferry, are eastern europeans, or Irish . They have a nice big, free carpark to catch up on their Kip. Unfortunatley most of them just wander over to Goodwick Moor ( a local nature reserve and beauty spot) find a bush and then take a 'Dump' . making them very unpopular with the locals and tourists alike. And 1foot complains about the dogs !!! Motorhomes VERY welcome after that lot ! Ray
