HymerVan
Planning a trip down through the west coast of France and then perhaps to northern Spain. We would reach Spain in early to mid June. We think we want to go along the North coast perhaps as far as Llanes then turn inland perhaps going as far as Leon. We might visit Burgos and/or Pamplona and might go as far south as Zaragoza. There seem to be relative few campsites in this inland part of Spain and we are uncertain to what extent wild camping is permissable and/or "aires" are available . We are reasonably experienced motorhome travellers in Europe but have never taken our van to Spain. Any advice regarding the above or any other aspect would be gratefully received. crinklystarfish
Wildcamping is about as easy as it gets and is tolerated in the entire region you describe. Sites are not uncommon either, but they can get rammed in popular areas; there are a handful of 'aires' too, but good luck finding them! If you've wildcamped successfully before, you shouldn't have any problems. As usual, if you are obviously causing offence, or are asked, just apologise and move. It's a good region with lots of less well known gems.
Guest JudgeMental
Along the North coast to Galicia is lovely, and down into Northern Portugal a great trip. Northern Portugal very different then the south!
PJay
I would agree with Judge. June will be an ideal time , as not to hot. Not as busy as the costa's and much nicer IMO Reasonable no of camp site along the way PJay
neilmac
As previously mentioned wildcamping in that part of spain is well tolerated. We spent some time there last May and on several occasions, when finding an 'ideal' spot we just asked a passing Guardia patrol if it was OK to stay. Each time the answer was yes but no 'camping' - so we had no concerns about being moved on in the middle of the night etc. Our stopover locations (Aires and wildcamping) we used are all on our website but we also blogged about the trip - http://motorhomingwithneilmac.blogspot.com.es/2011_05_01_archive.html http://i97.photobucket.com/albums/l229/neilmac500/20110528-_MG_6917.jpg One of our wildcamping spots Its a lovely part of Spain :-D
Bojitoes
If you are in the area Burgos is a must see. The cathedral, monastery & town are must sees, although el Cid's tomb is not what you would think. The monastery, 20 minutes walk from town, or 3 minutes by bus is 7€ to get in but you get a guided tour which is excellent value for money. There is a municipal campsite (ACSI) 5 minutes from town on a bus route. Facilities are excellent. Burgos played a major part in the Spanish Civil war but we did not see anything relating to that time. We were there in February and will definitely go back. There is also an ACSI site just north of Pamplona which will be lovely at that time of year- it was a bit cold when we were ther in January. If you want to travel a bit further south Segovia is definitely worth the trip Bob
bob b
Salamanca is a lovely city. I stayed at a local campsite for one night on my way to the west coast of Portugal. I rode into the city on my motorbike and had a meal in the city square. At dusk, all the lights around the square were switched on and the effect was really quite magical. In case you haven't seen it, read the 'Robbed in Spain' thread for some useful tips/advice. It's been running from December 2011 with over 23000 views and has some extremely important and useful information to anyone thinking of touring mainland Spain for the first time. It would have proved useful to people such as yourselves had it been kept permanently on the main page but instead has been left to get 'buried'. You will find it on page 5 or 6. HymerVan
Thanks for all contributions which I will digest carefully. Bulletguy it was kind of you to mention your thread. I was aware aware of it and I was very sorry to hear of your experience. I hope that you have got over it and been able to "get back on the horse again" so to speak.
