1993 Hymer B544 - Fiat Ducato Speedometer

Sorry to be posting such a random question on a Monday night. We're touring Europe in our 1993 Hymer B544 - aka Dave. After great advice on a previous thread about gear change problems we were having Dave now has a lovely new clutch fitted at the Fiat Garage in Narbonne. We picked him up on Thursday and have managed to get quite a distance from Narbonne before we noticed that the speedometer wasn't working.

We're loathed to trail all the way back to Narbonne, and hubby is quite good with mechanical stuff, so would happily reattach the speedo cable to the gear box, if we could find it! He's had the engine guard off from underneath and a good nose around without jacking Dave up, but can't locate it.

Does anyone know where it connects? Are we looking in the right place? Any clues would be a big help.

Thanks

Hi, do not know if this may help ,as our van ( 2.8 ) is a bit younger than yours. The speedo cable on ours goes into the top of the gearbox, behind the steering rack, midway across the van, you can see it by lying on your back under the van.

ps you should be able to trace it down from the back of the speedo.

I can't advise where the speedometer cable attaches to the gearbox of a 2.5litre turbo-diesel Ducato but, as thebishbus says, you may be able to trace its route from where it emerges from the rear bulkhead of the engine compartment.

You seem to be assuming that the reason the speedometer is no longer working is because its cable is not attached to the gearbox. This is a reasonable assumption to make after a clutch change (and let's hope that locating and reattaching the cable does provide a simple fix), but if the cable isn't connected to the gearbox you may start to lose oil. Even if your husband is happy to get his hands dirty, you may want to consider getting a 'professional' involved asap and not continue to drive without the problem being properly investigated.

It would seem from on-line comments that speedometer cables for this age of Ducato are no longer on Fiat's parts-list, though the are available from other sources:
