derek pringle
Hi All, any help appreciated please. From late August to the end of September my wife and I are thinking of taking a journey through France ,starting at Calais and travelling down to Carcassonne, then going through the Pyrenees-Rioja region ,San Sebastian and finally coming home via Bilbao to Portsmouth. We would appreciate any tips on the following:- Sites to stay close to Carcassonne as I do not walk too well, inside the walls if at all possible. Similar to the centre of San Sebastian as we watched a foodie programme some time ago and it made the place seem very appealing. Also thinking of following the South Coast of France on our way to Carcassonne to get some nice weather and Sea Views. Any info on the pyrenees. Finally, at the expense of sending half of you to sleep could I ask if there are any fishermen out there as I do like the odd go if a site has a lake on, would be the icing on he cake so to speak. I will obviously be trolling through tourist info. but there is nothing like hearing from people with hands on experience. Thanks in advance of any replies cheers derek
lennyhb
There is an Aire fairly close to the town in Carcassonne:- CARCASSONNE 11 - AUDE - Languedoc Roussillon 60 km O de Narbonne Parking entée à gauche de la citadelle Longitude: 2.37343 Latitude: 43.20512 [degrés décimaux]
malc d
No camping inside the walls - but Camping de la Cite is just outside - but about 10 to 15 minute walk away. ( 10 to 15 mins if my memory serves me right ! )
cinder toffee
I have recently returned from Spain and spent a day at Carcassonne wandering around within the walls. You can park your motorhome in a designated bus and motorhome parking areajust by the entrance, not as close as the car parking but only a few minutes walk. It costs 5 euros for 6 hours which is enough time to have a wander and some lunch! Whilst I did enjoy it I thought it was very commercialised, every shop within the walls was either a gift shop or ice-cream shop it could have been straight out of any Disney set! Delfin Driver
Camping La Cite is only a 10-15 minute walk from the city but it is uphill most of the way- and quite steep in parts.
JamesFrance
There is only the one camping in Carcassonne as already mentioned: http://www.camping-delacite-carcassonne.com/presentation If you are planning to go from there to Andorra be aware that the route via Quillan has a very narrow winding road with overhanging rockfaces along the Aude gorge. Carcassonne was restored by someone from the Loire, so the roofs are not correct for the area. The Languedoc coast you would pass is very crowded at that time of year and probably best viewed from a distance as there are just a mass of very large and noisy campsites. Further South is much better.
Retread24800
Do not use the car/coach/Motor-home park just under the walls, when we visited there were two CC parked there and a Police car because the CC had been broken into, the Police said is was a problem, there is no security. There is direct access into a fairly rough area of the town and the scrotes watch you as you depart for two hours and take their time robbing the vans. Use either Camping de la Cité (4040) or the Aire (12030). Both have a Navette (Bus) going into the town from just outside. The numbers refer to the entry in Campingcar-infos. Enjoy beautiful part of the world but the Pyrénées are better appreciated from the plains on the French side:-)
malc d
My experience of the Pyrenees has invariably been dry and hot on the south side ( Spain) and cloudy and wet on the north side ( France ) Nice scenery though - both sides.
derek pringle
Thank you all for the helpful posts. Le Cite camping looks fine and if I can make the walk then at least we will be able to rest over a nice drink and meal. After driving down through France will probably keep to the Spanish side of the Pyrenees. cheers derek

I also toured from Calais down via the Dordogne last May. Would I do it again? Yes! Yes! Yes!

John Edward
I live in Nerja, Malaga and am a member of the Nerja Fishing Club. We will be driving to the UK in June and July via Valencia, Barcelona, Carcassonne and then spending 2 weeks in the Charente-Maritime region of France at twinlakesfrance.com for a fishing holiday. They have 2 lakes which are well stocked. There is a bar overlooking the lake. Garry supplies fresh bread every morning. Motorhome parking is in a spacious field overlooking the lake. I cannot recommend this site enough.
