France in August

Didnt get any replies to this last time, still looking for information about how crowded sites get in August. We are planing to go back to Brittany this August. We prefer touring around a finding a site each evening rather than booking. Last time we were there about 5 years ago in July we had no problem finding campsites except very near the coast. Does any one have recent experience of Brittany in August, do you think we will have problems finding sites? We dont mind 'wild camping' occasionally but would prefer to be on sites.

Alan, Yes France is busy in August but Bittany is not half as busy as Cornwall. We were there last year and in one month were only stuck in one traffic jam; compare that with the west country. Where to stay, well we stayed on the aires de service every night with no problems. There are more aires in Brittany than any where else in France so if one does not seem right for you another is never far away. The ones on the coast do fill up by the end of the day, so we try to arrive by end of afternoon but if official aire is full French 'vanners find places near by, so join them. Three you might like to try (all in Cotes-D'Amour): Treguier: Just outside town on river bank. Full by 6.00 pm, no charge. Nice setting and easy walk to historic town centre. Paimpol: 2 aires, one wooded, one more open on hardstanding. Both very easy walk to nice port and town. 5 euros per night in August. Pleneuf-Val-Andre:On edge of marina, nice place to walk round. 3 Euros per night inclusive of shower. Enjoy your trip, use the aires, buy cheap fuel, drink the wine and think of the 'vanners paying £20 a night, stuck in traffic and watching it rain in the west country! All the best Robert and Jean.

Hi Alan, What robertanjean did not tell you is that the French go on Holiday in August enmasse. Industry closes down on the Continent during August. Just tryand get anything from suppliers over there in August, come back in Sept they say. You are more likely to find Camp sites inland a bit rather than on the Coast. We were going to stay on Aires as much as possible the back end of last Sept. They were a bit like Blackpool beach on a Bank Holiday, also hot. If you fancy sitting on Hot tarmac, then I suppose some people dont mind. We would rather have a nice bit of grass. David

If you are using aires there is no problem whatsoever. We head all over France in school summer holidays and never ever book. Arrive at an aire late morning early afternoon and pick your pitch wisely. The French never arrive till early evening as they park near beaches etc all day. Brittany is one of the best for free aires so you will not have a problem. I have done this for the last four years now and as long as you set up pitch before the first weekend in August and stay put over that weekend you are fine. The French call that weekend "Black Weekend" as there as so many French going on holiday then and there are many accidents. The most popular campsites will be full but people are always moving on and off site. Go for it.
