Since Eurotunnel opened it has never once matched comparable Ferry fares which are much cheaper. Both reasons (1) and (2) are valid enough but for me (only a 100 mile journey and a Frequent Traveler account) it seems worth the extra to use the Chunnel, everyone has to make their own choices.
