lennyhb
France or Germany both are Motorhome heaven. France will have the better weather if you go 200 - 300 miles south, nearer and driving more pleasant much less traffic. In both countries never a problem finding somewhere to overnight. And once over the water if you don't like where you are or the weather just move on to another area or county. A few years ago we were heading for the German Baltic coast weather in Belgium & forecast for Baltic was so bad we turned south spent a few day in beautiful sunshine on the Moselle and finally ended up in Slovenia. OurTour.co.uk
I agree, for a first time trip you'll be amazed at how motorhome friendly France is. It feels like home now. We can drive into pretty much any decent sized town and find somewhere free or cheap to stop for the night. Our first trip was across Normandy, all on campsites and we loved that too. The attitude across the channel is so relaxed and there are so many other motorhomes about there's always help at hand if you're unsure about stuff. lennyhb
nuevoboy - 2012-05-12 7:26 PM England :-) Assuming Dave is English England is not abroad. Secondly England must be the most Motorhome unfriendly place in Europe, can't park anywhere, can't stop overnight anywhere & if you can park they charge a arm and a leg & expect you to pay for two spaces. malc d
granddad - 2012-05-11 11:54 PM if you was to go abroad for the 1st time where would you go and try France. Quiet roads, plenty of campsites, easy parking ( very few height barriers ). The further east you go, the busier it gets - Germany also motorhome friendly but much ' busier '. The nearer you go to the centre of the EU, the worse it gets for traffic ! ;-)
malc d
nuevoboy - 2012-05-12 7:26 PM England :-) Go abroad now while you can afford it - --------------------------- best to keep England in reserve for when diesel is £15 a litre !!! :-(

colin
I would say France is as good a place as any to make a first visit in a van, you don't need to go down to med or anything, even a trip around Picardy can be pleasent enough. There is another alternative which doesn't seem to be suggested very often, Eire, you get a slightly different country with different currency but everyone speaks english and they drive on same side of road as us. George Collings
It depends to fair extent on where in the UK you live relative to ferries or the Chunnel. From the south east there is a wide choice of relativly cheap crossings but the choice from the north or south west of UK is far more limited and many times more expensive. However if you have to travel long distances in the Uk to find a cheap ferry it costs an arm and a leg for fuel. Living in South Devon we normally drive for 40 minutes to Plymouth or an hour to Pool to travel to Brittany and then south into Southern Europe. Brttany is superb but has more or less the same climate as Devon and Cornwall. Rural France is superb and the roads are so quiet. The Continent is a big place with by UK standards long distances between large towns. Dont drive to far and leave time to potter. Having said that our first trip with the camper van ( always by car before so driving was no problem) was well south of Rome. Go for it,
