Transit spare wheel carrier.

We have a Hymer Van (2008) which is fitted with a spare wheel carried under the near side which is held up by a cable with a winding mechanism. When we had a problem with jamming a couple of years ago, we were told by the Ford garage that it was a Hymer fitting. However, we had it sorted out by Brownhills and it turned out to be a Ford part. Hymer had probably relocated it from the rear of the Transit to the middle under the nearside.

Is there any chance, please, of you providing some photos of how the Ford winding mechanism is attached to the underside of your Hymer Van's chassis?

This is the sticking-point regarding carrying a spare-wheel in a similar position on a Hobby Van. The winding mechanism itself presents no difficulties: it will be (as you've said) a standard Ford part. But fixing the mechanism to the chassis where Ford will (presumably) have never intended it to go must have involved a Hymer adaptation during the conversion stage.

If Richard (Uncle Bulgaria) can see what Hymer did, he'll have a better idea of what he'd need to have done to carry a spare-wheel on his Hobby Van.

We will be pleased to better describe the fixing if you can give us a few days to scramble under the van. We hope that the weather will be better for crawling about on the ground. We'll try to take some photos and hopefully post them onto the site but we are amateurs when it comes to the internet.

Thanks for agreeing to do that. A description of the way in which the spare-wheel is carried on your Hymer would be very helpful and, if you can provide some photos as well, that would be even better.

Posting photos to this forum can be a pain, as there's a 100kb limit to the file-size of the photo. I've copied below my earlier advice.

ATTACHING PHOTOS TO A POSTING

When you post a reply or start a new thread, below the box into which you will type your text you'll see four 'buttons'. The lowest button has "Attach a file after posting" alongside it. If you plan to attach a photo (or photos), you should tick that button. When you click "SUBMIT" a window will appear that allows you to browse through your computer files and select the photo(s) you want.

Note that the file-size of a photo MUST NOT exceed 100kb.

If your photo's original file-size is larger than 100kb, you'll need to reduce that size to below 100kb otherwise the photo will not transfer. (Plenty of ways to do this - for example Windows Picture Manager.)
