Have just stayed the night on the Joinville aire between Chaumont and St Dizier. It is free by a working canal with a grass area and seating between the aire and canal. Takes about ten vans. Water is 2euros for ten minutes and electricity 2 euros for 55 minutes. Dispensed through new borne using credit card.

some traffic by the day but quiet at night

Stopped here a few years ago on our return from sept & oct in (mainly) Provence. All services were free then. Possibly 4 vans on when we were there.

Two supermarkets very close by, Lidl and a Super U. Small village, and very very cold after our stay further south.

Well Starvin let's hope more people do stay on Joinville aire and spend money in town as that is why town have provided it. Yes situation is nice next to canal, but vans are parked adjacent to a road which although not too busy cars do pass fairly close. Other nice aires we have stayed on in area are:

Ligny-en-Barrois, overlooks canal, nice town

Chaumont, again canal side location but with hook-up and wi-fi for 6.40€/night

Juzzencourt. Not by canal but in village centre with hook-ups; no charge.

Thanks to original poster for sharing their aire.

So, if Joinville is full try Froncles Halte nautique (48.29949,5.15232) just a few km (about 12) further South or Vieville (48.23807,5.12991) about another 5km onwards.

Froncles Halte nautique has electricity and toilets and is alongside the same canal as that at Joinville, it's not free, was 3€ last year. Vieville is more rural, on the same canal and has electricity but no toilets. The price was the same.
