mhsurfer
In order to fit Heoafe locks to the Fiat Ducato cab doors, the Remis blind needs a cut out. Can the blind be removed easily from the door and replaced?
Derek Uzzell
Welcome to the Out&AboutLive forums. These REMIfront-blind fitting instructions relate to Fiat Ducato X/244 and the current X/250 models. http://www.motorcaravanning.co.uk/pdf/RemiFront2DucatoBoxer.pdf http://www.motorcaravanning.co.uk/pdf/remis_ducato_3.pdf The cab-door blind frames are attached via self-tapping screws, but it would not surprise me if the frames also had adhesive backings that would complicate removal/refitting. Presumably the cut-out needed for the HEOSafe locks is quite small? If it proves difficult to remove the blind frames, you could try sliding a piece of thin metal between the plastic frame of the blind and the door itself (to protect the door's surface from damage) and then use a drill with a small-diameter bit to roughly produce the cut-out, finishing the job off tidily with a suitable tool. I'd probably use that technique even if I had removed the blind frames, and it may well be that producing the cut-out with the blinds left on the cab-doors is as easy as producing the cut-out with the blinds removed from the doors. mhsurfer
Thanks Derek for your response and the pdf links. I could cut the slot out in situ as you suggest using a Dremel tool. My problem is in fixing the lock with self tapping screws and then hiding them behind the frame. Without removing the frame I would also have to cut slots to acess the lock screws, not such a neat job.
Derek Uzzell
OK, being a neatness-freak myself I can understand your wish to do a tidy job. There's a comment ('Raindancer', Jan 16 2008) on the following link suggesting fitting the locks lower down (presumably) to avoid having to modify the blinds' frames http://www.motorhomefacts.com/ftopic-38642-days0-orderasc-10.html I also found this earlier O&AL forum thread http://www.outandaboutlive.co.uk/forums/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=25885&posts=20 In the 2nd posting 'lennyhb' says that he has removed the side-window blinds from his motorhome. The implication from his posting is that it should be easy to take them off and (from other comments) it sounds like the side-window frames are merely attached by self-tapping screws (ie. no additional 'gluing' is involved). Suggest you experiment by removing the attachment screws and see if the blind-frame just detaches from the door.
mhsurfer
Hi Derek, thanks for your advice and links. We will investgate self tappers when we get the van next week and report back.
mhsurfer
We sucessfully fitted the Heosafe locks 11cm up from the lowest part of the Remis blind by undoing the one self tapping screw (2012 model) flexing the blind outwards and using a long allen key to insert the self tappers. The whole of the white back plate is hidden behind the blind along with the screw heads. A template for the cut-out for the Remis blind is available on the heosafe website. Thanks for your help.
