Gas Locker Lock

Recommended Posts

One of the two locks on my gas locker is playing up, it is difficult to open due to not being able to key all the way in.

I have got a price from Auto-trail of £15 plus VAT and Carriage which is expensive compared to on-line stockists but they can supply the lock which will take the same key as all the other lockers whic is what I want.

Does anyone know a supplier that can supply locks to suit the existing keys?

also

I have seen special keys advertised to enable the removal of the existing lock barrel.

Do I need one of these or can I get the lock barrel out without one?

Hi Cliffy,

I had the same problem on our gas locker door, I squirted 3 in 1 oil into the lock until the oil was running out, left it a while then managed to get the key fully in and unlocked ok. I then took the whole lock mechanism off and thourghly soaked it in oil and cleaned it all up, refitted it and it has been fine now for 2 years. I give all the locks a squirt of oil before the winter and again in the late winter.

I think its water and road muck that gets in them.

Ours is an Autotrail as well.

With certain types of lock it's possible to remove and replace the 'barrel' if there is a problem. This link may be useful

but, if you want a replacement lock to match your present keys, I suspect the Auto-Trail asking-price is unlikely to be bettered.

It's recommended that lock lubrication does not involve use of oily/greasy products, as grit/dirt will stick to the lubricated surfaces. Specialised 'dry' lubricants are widely available - for example

Thanks for the replies.

The MH is in store this week but when I get it out later this week I will give the lock a good oil and clean as suggested and if that fails I will atempt to take it to pieces and fix it.

I always have Autotrail as a back stop. The lower lock still works so I am not stuck with beinf unsecure..

Cheers

My gas locker lock failed. I took photos of the barrel, sent them to Auto-Trail and they identified the correct replacement so that I can use the same key. The person who fitted the new one was not very "handy" and it works ok, albeit turning the opposite way to the other one!

Edit: I wouldn't fancy driving around with only one lock secured with all that weight (2 bottles) behind the flap and if one lock has failed, the other one might too.

Have had the lock off the and cleaned it out with GT85 and then lubricated it with dry lube and it works perfectly.

I did have to remove the door to reasemble the catch as gravity was working against me on the van.

Thanks for the good advice, that's the equivalent to the cost of two nights campsite fees saved, another success from the forum.

Thanks

Cliff
