07 Peugeot 2.2HDI fuel gauge

I am having problems with a dodgy fuel gauge ,when stationary and occasionly whilst travelling the gauge will show the correct level of fuel in the tank, but the majority of the time it shows empty and the flashing low level light is activated .However the engine still runs smoothly and there is no loss of power. A local mechanic suggested that the float or sendor attached to the fuel pump was faulty, but replacement of the fuel pump is about £200+. Has anyone experienced any simular problem?

I have filled the fuel tank to its limit and now record the milage as a safegard . :-(

Hi there,

It could be a COMPASS thing !!!!!

I have a 2006 Compass Castaway on a Peugeot 2.8HDi

A few years back whilst travelling back up the M5 we drove

through a " hell of a thunderstorm " with torrential rain.

I then noticed that the fuel gauge was nearly on empty but

i`d only fuelled up that morning. Thinking we had a leak i

pulled onto the hard shoulder to have a look.

Nothing, no leaks, no smell of diesel no nothing.

To be on the safe side i came off at the next exit and found

the nearest fuel. To my amazement it only took £15 to fill it.

The gauge still showed only 1/4 full but i knew it was full and

carried on. When we got home i made a few enquiries and

got " all sorts " of answers of different garages.

A few days later it had dried up and was nice and warm, i

got in the van to drive to a garage and the fuel gauge was

working again.

You cannot fix something that is working OK so i didn`t bother.

I have now after several episodes of it working and then showing

nearly empty put it down to the electrics getting wet as it only

happens in really heavy rain especially on the motorway.

There is access to the top of the tank ( on mine anyway ) from

a cover in the cab in the middle of the floor. I have cleaned the

contacts and tried to protect it the best way i can.

Thankfully to date it has not happened again.

Hope this is of help.

Regards

Graham.

Hello,

We have seen many faulty fuel guages on 2002 to 2006 Sevel vehicles but none yet on 2007 'X250' types. They all have the same set-up though which consists of a combined fuel lift pump and fuel level sender device.

The indicated level on the earlier vans would rarely show more than 7/8ths full even when brimmed and always resulted in the lift pump being replaced. The fact that yours is mostly showing empty suggests that it may be capable of 'self-calibration' or may have a poor connection. This has happened on some of our trucks and has often been remedied by the following procedure;

Remove the cover that is part of the floor matting and is between the front seats. You should be able to see an electrical connection. Leave the fuel pipes alone. I have not done this myself yet, so cannot tell you how the electrical plug on the pump is attached; it might be a 'lift the tab' or a 'squeeze from the sides' or some other, but you should be able to figure out how to remove it without breaking it! Before you remove the plug, switch the ignition on. You will hear the pump running (priming the fuel system). Wait about 20 seconds until this sound has stopped (which it will if you do not start the engine) and disconnect the plug. Switch the ignition off. Reconnect the plug and then switch the ignition on again.

I would hope that you will now see a correct reading on the fuel level guage. If you don't, I am afraid that you will need a new sender after all. It is definitely worth a try though.

Also remember that if you are going to have a new sender/pump fitted you should make sure that there is no more than half a tank of diesel present, or it will get very messy indeed.

Good luck, and don't forget to let us know how you get on.

Nick

We don`t know it`s a 2007 X250 they haven`t said

The only reason i say is that mine is a 2006 X244, but because it was first registered in 2007,

07 plate, the " System " thinks it is a 2007 X250 when you put the registration in.

Also when i order parts i order by make , model and engine size and when they ask the year

i say 2006 because the registration just causes confusion.

I`ve had too many wrong parts because the " System " knows best.

Regards

Hi,

Followed Nick,s procedure ,removed the electrical plug ,via lifting a yellow tab, cleaned the contacts and replaced ,but it still not working correctly, drove around for a couple of miles and needle shows level of fuel, then dives to zero for a mile or two then back to previous reading. Have not priced new pump/sendor it still drives ok no loss of power when needle dives to zero.

As a matter of interest pump is marked as being made by Sews Cabind of Morroco a division of Sumitomo Electrics , and manufacturing date was 12/12/05 so it is same pump as fitted to previous older models .

Thanks to all who have contributed to this thread

Hello,

I am sorry that you did not have any luck, but hope you feel that it was worth trying.

I have now done some research and can confirm that at least as far as Fiat is concerned all JTD engines from 1999 to 2006 used the same lift pump/sender. It was secured with a metal flange by about 10 small screws. I would expect that PSA used the same pump for all of their common rail engined vehicles too.

The 2007 Ducato lists a variety of sender units depending on the engine size and a number of options but none have been used on earlier vehicles. They are all secured by a similar plastic lock ring as you see on fuel filter housings these days. The early manufacture date that is on yours suggests that it has been previously used on another PSA manufactured vehicle, but definitely not one also badged as a Fiat.

The other thing that i noticed is that all of the senders for 2007 onwards Fiats with 2.3 or 3.0 engines have been superceded in 2009. None of the part numbers for 2.2 engines have changed at all from 2007 to the current day and that will be the case for PSA badge vehicles also.

A new sender unit for your vehicle will be about £180 and only a Peugeot dealer will be able to match yours exactly by chassis number because there are about 6 different types.

Thinking logically, If your fuel reading varies between full (or at least correct) and no fuel at all this could be the sender unit or the electrical connections somewhere between it and the dash (and the ecu is between these). If your reading varies between something and something but not completely empty then I would go for the sender without hesitation.

This problem will take a bit of diagnosing and will probably be best achieved by visiting an experienced main agent or specialist. It might not be cheap but will save time and hassle.

As we do not run any 2.2 engined Fiats and hardly ever see them, my experience of zero faults on 07 onwards Fiats is somewhat irrelevant. In PSA circles this fault may be well known and documented. Best to ask I think.
