Calais Docks or around Tunnel

Recommended Posts

Anyone recently returned from Calais port notice any overnight stoppers or stayed themselves.

Read on another page car park closed to overnighters last month, is this now still closed or open.

If not where is it safe now around the Tunnel area to stopover night, arriving at midnight.

We only use Eurotunnel and always park at City Europe motorhome parking area follow the bus signs along to Boulevard Due Kent Coquelles. We have done this numerous times every year since 2007 without any problems , sometimes anything up to a dozen m/h's parked up. Also handy for a last minute purchase of wine.

We pulled into parking area at Cite Europe on 1st July at approx 5.30pm and we couldn't get parked as it was full of cars. Had to block the road for 40 mins waiting for a couple of people to leave so we could get in. By 10pm it was empty except for motorhomes and we felt very safe.

By the time we left at 0800 the next morning, there was only 4 of us left.

We have not used Calais Port car park this year. However we used the Cité Europe motorhome parking – to and from France - in May/June this year with no problems. On both occasions we were one of about 10 ‘vans.

Used Calais Docks aire again in June and will again in August en route to Dussledorf. The chips from the chip kiosk are fantastic. For us the tunnel is fit for freight, not humans. Just look at their fire safety record and make up your own mind.

We used to stay at Citie euro until Easter when 2 motorhomes next to us where broken into. We disturbed them as we got back to our van. They dropped a bag whilst running away. The bag contained a lap top, It was from a Dutch van parked next to us , The other van was French .A number of buses had also been broken into. The French police turned shrugged their shoulders and that was it. We have just returned home and spent our last night on the Yacht basin, One Brit who parked next to us had been down to the docks and Told us he was turned away .There appear to be some kind of Building work going on He told us. The Security at the tunnel and the port has been raised at the tunnel after the ticket booths all vehicles are being checked by The French customs and Police all buses have to disembark and go through the French customs hall; they even have to unload their luggage. Same again when you reach the British controls they appeared to rather keen on doing searches. We had our van checked over even wanted to check inside the shower. The French seemed to be looking for over the limit on Tobacco and Booze even after I told them I did not smoke
