Euro 5 and DPF

Tracker

Recommended Posts

Euro five has been with us now since late 2011 and I wonder what the experience of owners is so far, both personal and anecdotal?

Some dealers are less than enthusiastic with tales of some owners having ongoing DPF problems and worsened not improved fuel economy?

To be fair, most dealers say that there are no problems and they tell of owners who are delighted - but the cynic in me says well, they would wouldn't they!

Rich,

I have heard of problems with DPF's on Diesel cars, especially one's that only 'tinker about',

evidently if the filter gets blocked, Diesel fuel is forced passed the pistons into the sump, causing an apparent increase in engine oil. But of course it isn't lubricating oil !! A close friend of mine recently swapped his newish Astra diesel for a petrol version, as it had happened to him 3 times. (he is a driver that everyone wants to overtake !!) So, if you have a vehicle with a DPF give it 'thrash' once a week to burn off all the 'crud' in the Filter. Personally any 'improvement' that causes drivers grief, needs more 'improvement' or removing completely. Ray

The 'stop press' Euro V available Now ! ads. don't impress me one bit !

My experience of " DPFs " is with our latest car.

The previous car Zafira Diesel Auto was a cracking car and averaged 41 MPG

which i was very happy with considering it was automatic.

So 18 months back a i got a new one and again went for the Zafira Diesel Auto.

You know when the filter is cleaning itself as the engine idle speed increases

and the engine note changes and sounds like it `s " Knocking " and creates an

awful " burning rubber " smell.

This shows dramatically on the onboard computer and the consumption drops

to a crazy 15 MPG. It is now 18 months old with 10,500 miles on the clock and

is averaging 27 MPG and that is a lot better than when it was new.

It was so bad when we first got it i booked it back into the dealer because i

thought there was a problem.

I`ve tried the " give it a good thrash " once a week or so but it doesn`t seem to

make any difference.

It makes me think that the newer motorhomes test reports that show MPGs of

19 - 23 MPG probably has something to do with this as well.

Regards

Graham.

My experience so far is limited.

We picked up our new Frankia with the Fiat euro 5 3ltr engine on 1st May in Germany.

So far we have covered 1500 miles and returned 23.6 mpg. our previous euro 4 3ltr also on a Frankia of the same weight / dimensions returned 18.7 in the it's 1st 1500 miles only getting up to 21.5 after it was well "run in".

At the mo' we haven't had any problems at all in fact the engine feels very lively and has a good deal more "grunt" than even the euro 4 which we had been pleased with.

Just as an aside, is the DPF subject to the same theft risks as the Euro4 catalyser, as I see that it hangs in the same, unprotected location? I.e. is it a DPF + catalyser?

On the dealers forecourt that I was on last week they had all been removed, leaving sensor, wiring and diesel/additive pipes hanging free. The dealer quoted an £1800 replacement cost, though I expect that you could add a few hundred £ to that if the aforementioned connections were just cut rather than neatly undone..

A filter for the 06 sprinter is £158, but from 09 on it is £599 as it looks like it has been incorporated into the cat, but the previous one is seperate. Glad I've got on 08 then.Fiat Ducato is £616. A hell of a lot more than a cat.

Still too early to really compare like for like mpg or encounter DPF effect, as we have only 600 miles on the new van. (Fiat Euro 5, 2.3L 130bhp)

But tank fill to tank fill is showing 27.4mpg (speedo readout is optimistically much higher)

Our prevuious Autocruise Sportstar, on Peugeot Euro 4, 2.2L 100bhp, recorded 23.6 at 650 miles, so manufacturers claims appear to be justified, at this early stage.

In Sheffield today a "Bosch" Diesel Specialist, had a big placard outside his premises stating " DPF's permanently removed" so there is obviously some problem(s) for some people or some vehicles.

From what I can glean on t'internet, DPF's will proboly be fine for vehicles on long runs but not very good on short runs. I was looking at getting diesel car next, but as it will proboly do short journies I'm now looking at petrol engined car.

We too switched form diesel to petrol in our car this year after dire warning about too many short runs in a Euro 5 diesel car and I must say that we are delighted with the actual tank to tank use of around 54 mpg from our Lexus CT200h (hybrid) which is also sensibly quick as well as very comfortable and quiet. Even the much media criticised ride is acceptable (if not, like so many cars these days, brilliant!) on the smaller 16" wheels so I doubt we will be buying another diesel car anytime soon!
