Hi all

We’re off to the Dordogne/Aquitaine area of France very soon going to take a couple of day getting there from Calais down the west coast-ish no rush……and I was just wondering if anyone had any tips and advice about good small camp sites in the area don’t need the all singing and dancing variety.

Cheers

There are lots of nice aires in that area which are a lot cheaper than campsites. At this time of year they will virtually all be 'singing and dancing' sites as it's French holiday period.

Domme is lovely but probably full as small aire (unless you get there early) The Lot valley has some nice aires too

Maybe take in Loire valley en route-try Amboise and/or Blois both have good aires-Amboise is 10 euros pn with Electricity and Blois is 5 without-both nice towns & chateux to visit

If you use the "search our forums" facility and just put in "dordogne, then loads of threads on this area come up.

Here's a taster:

We've recently got back from 3.5wks travelling around that area.... so can recommend the following -

Angoulins sur Mer - Near to La Rochelle (about a 10 min drive out) recommend transport, like bikes or scooter or car

Free Car park style aire right nr sea, seperate water dump/water available on way to aire ( N45º36'33 W0º35'50)

Actual overnight parking available at Rue du Chay - N46.106216 W1.135712, also about 5 more spaces further along the same road.

Verteuil-sur-Charente

Free aire gravel car park style in small village. This is next to a saw mill, but wasn't too noisy when we were there. Water/dump available.

N45.979861 E0.235251

Brantome

As previously mentioned, the aire is grass but right on the river. Very peaceful. Only a 2 minute walk into the town. Man comes round every morning at 8am for money - now 4 euros per night. Water dump available.

Collonges la rouge N45.058612, E1.659196

Gravel aire just outside beautiful village. 5 euros a night, man comes round usually 7pm at night or sometimes in morning as well. Full water dump facilities and bread van each morning except Sunday.

Good local places to visit.

(Free aire are available nearby at Turenne N45º3'14 E1º34'47)

Souillac N 44.891596 E1.476749

Free aire within walking distance of town and river. All facilities available. Nice and quiet.

Catus N44.555847 E1.33901

Small village with free aire and water dump right on river/canal/stream. Nearby lake available for fishing and day parking or you can park near lake overnight as well although I would think you may get some road noise.

Mirepoix N43.085169 E1.873944

Two parted aire, free parking with water and toilet dump and water supply. A fabulous market on the Monday mornings, well worth a visit. Don't try and arrive on the Monday mornings as its on the edge of a very popular car park for market visitors.

Good ACSI campsite (although I think now not doing ACSI price for summer)

Villefranche de Rouergue N44.34245 E2.026098

Get there in for Thursday morning market which is awesome.

We had a fabulous time and if you like a market/car boot sales then take a look at http://brocabrac.fr/

and select which area you're visiting to see details of any local car boots..... we got some amazing bargains!

I took this one off www.motorhomefacts.com - Camping Des Iles (Beaulieu-sur-Dordogne, Limousin.

With 20 pitches this site set on an island, in the middle of the Dordogne is in a fabulous position. A very short walk brings you to the town - it’s like walking into a time machine as you go through the old medieval quarter.

There’s a Strawberry festival in May and in the 2nd weekend in September the annual Fêtes des Corps Saints is held. On the Sunday bands play in the street all morning, there’s a procession of decorated floats in the afternoon and a fun fair in the evening. There’s also a fireworks display on the Saturday evening. It’s well worth a visit if you plan to be here at the time. There were two other recommendations apart from the original post. AnACSI site costing €11 in 2011.

We ave not used it ouselves.

Hi Just got back from this area.

The aire at Batome is a must I was told to stay there by others on here and it is well worth a visit.

If you really dont mind ultra basic sites we stumbled across this and really enjoyed a quiet couple of days there.

Just realised, there's an error in my last post. The site has 120 pitches not 20. Would not want to give duff information.
