We want to buy a motorhome with bunk beds, 6 berth, 2 young boys,

What shall we get. I like the homecar? Tried the CI Carioka... Wanting a large fridge as I am a coeliac!! (No wheat intake -difficult to get fast food) Plus microwave?

Any suggestions? Help?

Cheers.

Hi Rob

Not sure which Homecar model you are considering, but the CI Carioca range although 6 berths have only 4 (incl Driver) belted seats.

The Eurostyle A69 has rear bunk beds & 6 belted seats, but not sure about the size of the fridge (guess around 100litre) & no Microwave as "standard".

The Swift Escape696 may meet your requirements

Or the Mooveo C647

Again not large fridges & no Microwave as "Standard"

A larger fridge on the Mooveo C650

Do check your licence as you have 2 young boys, you may be restricted to 3500kg MAM (gross vehicle weight) & if so available payload on a 6 berth Motorhome may be restrictive, when all passengers & their essential gear on board.

Hi Rob

Here's another that comes closer to tyour requirement.

I knew the model but couldn't find a link earlier.

6 berth, 6 belted seats, Fridge looks decent size & Microwave could be fitted in place of oven.

they were imported by Marquis, so worth checking their website also.

Also if your licence allows >3500kg this Hymer may be of interest.

Does your requirement for 6 berths imply you intend travelling with three adult passengers plus driver plus two young boys? Does you driving licence entitle you to drive vans over 3.5 tonnes? If the answer to the first is yes, and to the second no, I think you will really struggle with payload. There are quite a few vans that claim 6 berths but, on a 3.5 tonne chassis, the available payload becomes extremely restrictive. Remember, even at a nominal 75kg per head, fours adults will take 300kg from what is available, leaving not a lot for anything else.

My suggestion, before you cast too much in stone, would be to follow this link and buy the book called "Go Motorhoming and Campervanning". http://tinyurl.com/cnyh9f4

It is a fund of information that may well save you from making expensive mistakes in choosing. All vans are a series of compromises, and what works for one family, is likely to be another families worst nightmare. Inadequate payloads are a consistent source of dissatisfaction, frequently because folk underestimate how much their stuff weighs, but also because they don't understand the basis on which manufacturers calculate what is available. Motorhomes, unlike cars, are very easy to over load, especially on one axle, usually the rear. Many folk do not at first realise that not only the van as a whole, but each axle individually, has its own load limit which it is illegal, apart from being potentially dangerous, to exceed.

I have no connection with the firm, or the authors, but know they are both experienced motorhomers, and write from that experience. Good luck with your search.

Hi Rob

I have a Carioca 656 08 model and it has 6 seatbelts ive had it 3 years and the only problems ive had are minimal [hinges on external storage doors].For a small family I think a 656 is ideal except the dinette area is quite small at meal times. We have a drive away awning and find the extra space is great especially with the Irish weather.

Hi Brian

I am ok for. c1 on my licence which actually means I can drive up to 7.5k mam on any motorhome

Rob

OK, but then why the six berths? A comfortable four berth would result in a physically smaller van with greater payload, which would have some advantages.

Not commenting on the motorhome but I do know that there is now much better availability of GF food abroad, even in France at the Carrefour, in Spain the Mercadonna,s are excellent and I've found GF in Austria and Germany, its definitely not as bad as it used to be !!!
