when and if we full time, we will have to rent out the house that we have not yet bought. The problem is ----mail. HAS anyone had this problem? we have no family so that is not an answer. Problems will be insurance, banking etc. We lived in France until recently and have discovered, the hard way, the penalties of a lack of UK address! (lol)

I do not know if you plan this pre retiral or post retiral. However, be aware that if and when you want your State Pension you will have to list all the times you spent outside the UK, whether working or not. What they are looking for is to see if you are eligible for benefits abroad.

Now you may be planning to spend the whole time in the UK but to my mind if you are full timing sooner or later the sun will beckon.

Remember also if you 'drop off the radar' then you are no longer on any electoral register and if you ever need any financial activity in the future you will be stymied. Getting normal mail is not a problem, someone somewhere will handle it for you whether it be relative or freind or business. However some mail needs a real address and you may have problems. Have you also considered medical planning as no doctor will register you unless you have an address.

There are a lot of things to consider and the old days of basically ''going awol' no longer apply.

If you do not have a permanent address in the UK and you leave the UK for more than 3 months (6 months if over 65 years old) you will no longer be eligible for NHS treatment. You will be charged for any treatment at a fixed rate which is not a private medical rate but is still expensive also as said before you will not be able to get a prescription from a doctor unless you pay the doctor for it and then pay for the medication.

Most people beleive that if you have paid NI for forty odd years you are are entitled to free treatment but this not the case it is based on residency. If you come from abroard and have been resident for one day you are fully entitled to NHS treatment.

All wrong but true

I will say that you must not rent a home that you don't already own. It may seem good today but after some time it may pose serious problems and legality issues. Life is not worth that kind of risk. Always take calculated risks. (>)

Why and how so?

Yup-,,,

All the problems you state have been either considered or experienced. We have no one to send mail to, we blag at the Dr's ( havn't been there for years) car insurance, well I was ready to commit suicide or murder. Now sorted. Our only address will be the one we rent out. Many on the forum decry house ownership-it becomes more important when there is no income, the dreams are reality and an income is not only desirable but essential!!!!!!! (lol) (lol)

Often wondered how gypsys get round this assuming of course that some of them have insurance.

Mainly because they aint Gypsys, they are itinerent Irish travellers who have their propertys in Ireland but chose to come over here and carry out their shody and despicable practices on the unsuspecting!
