Hi All We are off to the Brittany region of France in about a fortnight and as it is our first trip we want a target campsite to head for on our first day and then plan to be more flexible after that. We arrive at about 7 in the morning so if anyone has any good recommendations of a site that is en-route to Brittany from Dunkerque that would be great. It doesn't matter if we need to travel for 3 to 4 hours on the other side but our main aim is to be on a nice campsite for about mid day which is well on the way to Brittany. As always any help much appreciated :-D Kevandali

Sorry, I meant East, of course. But why would you cross to Dunkerque if you're going to Brittany? Much longer crossing than D/C with far fewer sailings, longer road journey and at best you'll only save a few quid. Going west, though, try the municipal at Etaples (next door to the biggest Allied War Cemetary in Europe and really worth a visit), or at Les Cappelles, outside Boulogne and near to a huge Auchan and many other stores where you can fill up with great French merchandise.

Cheers for the info, keep them coming, also looking at Minicipal sites with swimming pool or close to the sea, for the kids (when we eventually get there)

Hi You would also go via Dunkerque if you are like me and want a cheap ferry ? we always use Norfolk Line they are really good and the price always seems the best ?? As for a place to stop what about the Aire at Le Touquet next to the equestrian centre (head for the airport) or I beleive there is another which is often suggested at Fecamp or a bit further on there is a very nice Aire at Honfleur, depends on how far you want to drive Brian

Once consulted with the boss (Ali) I think we will head for Honfleur, I have checked the AA route Planner and there is only 13km difference between using the toll roads (A28, A29, E44) and non toll roads. My question is, if deciding to take the toll route what are the toll prices like? I have to way up the fact that we might get lost on the non toll route as it involves a lot of different roads against the fact that the kids will be dying to get out and about. I suppose if there is that many parking opportunities we could always have mini breaks en route.

Kev Click on the following link for the official French Toll road site. You can get a very good route card and the total cost of any toll roads you use. When you do your route, enter your vehicle as a 'minibus' http://www.autoroutes.fr./index.php?lng=2 We did Brittany last year and stopped approx half way in Bayeux. There is a Municipal Aire or if you want a bit more luxury try this link. This is a lovely site. www.chateau-martragny.com Safe trip, will be in France on Monday no idea where we are going! Pat

Autoroute tolls cost us 10€10 earlier this month using the Rouen route, and worth it imo. We have done that coastal stretch before and enjoyed it - but it is slow going especially the bit in Normandy round to Le Havre. Pont du Normande is something else but has a toll of around 4€ there is also a toll for the stretch to Le Havre. If you take the Rouen route you can either head west to Honfleur or South West towards St Nazaire, and 'hit' Brittany coast from the south west. All good fun. Enjoy B-)

Hi, if your heading for the Aire at Honfleur i would try to make it as early as you can especially if you want to use the electric hookups ? so it may be worth using the toll roads if you can't get on the Aire you could always try the harbour wall at Trouville-sur-mer, its not a designated Aire but you will find a lot of French use it ? and it looks very safe and you are right in the town ?

Another alternative is the municipal Aire (the municipal campsite is alongside as a cheap fall-back if the aire is full) at Arromanches on the coast. Pluses are a great neach for the kids, anhd the remains of the vast Mulberry habour built post-D-day and a real education for the kids.
