but that only applies if you are a VAT registered business, and change it to a camper for private use. then VAT would be payable by the business owner/user.

a private individual has to pay VAT up front anyway. its the taxation class that changes when you convert it....

If payload is the primary concern and you know how much payload you need to be within the law, and you know the unladen weight of any given conversion it may be worth speaking to SVTech who specialise in payload upgrades some of which are purely paper exercises with more that can be achieved simply by adding easy to fit air suspension to the rear axle and/or upgrading tyres to a higher load limit.

They are very knowledgeable and very helpful so well worth seeking their advice before you get too far into the decisions as it might possibly enable you to buy a standard van and upgrade it for less outlay than an already higher payload van?

Hi At present we have a 1999 LWB Transit panel van. Converted ourselves. Fully fitted with sink, hob, oven, fridge, toilet & shower, Tv & satallite dish, bike rack to carry two electric bikes, awning outside table & chairs etc etc. Fully loaded we still have plenty of payload left. No where to put anything else but payload available. When asking already converted vans the salesmen have just poohood the payload but when pressed the figures that they give us are not good. By the time we carry all we have now we would be overloaded. We know that the cost will not be much cheaper doing it ourselves and the resale value would not be good but the van is for us not to sell. The only reason we are changing is that we now prefer a permanent bed instead of having to put it away every day.

Sounds like your best option is to reconfigure your existing van ;-)........................

I agree; and I bet you could save a few Kg just by the fact that you know more precisely what you need.

I know I would do a few things differently, and I may well get around to some of the mod's I have in mind, and some of them would increase payload.

I'd bin the Fiamma 4.5M awning, and replace it with a less sophisticated sunshade. Then I'd halve our "freshwater" storage tank. We've never needed 80Litres!, maybe don't even need 40Litres.

It's all about knowing how you intend to use your van, isn't it? I reckon that would increase our payload by approx 60Kg.

We have a permanent longitudinal bed, which is why we had our van built to my layout. Fortunately we are both only about 5' 8" tall, so it works very well on a 6M Ducato.

If one of us were blessed with a height of 6'-6' 3" I'd go for the extra long wheelbase Ducato.

Happy converting

Or just travel with it nearly empty and maintain the option of more?

That's an option Tracker.

But the space and payload savings are there for the taking!

And when you go the bespoke route you do it because you don't want to make compromises,

If you undersling the tanks below the floor you don't lose internal space - unless you intend deep winter camping in which case internal tanks would probably be better, unless you heat the tanks?

Why are you lot replying to a thread which the original poster hasn't been on since early September!!! *-)

Probably because it has so far been an interesting and, more importantly, abuse free thread!

... more likely because you're all bored and need something to entertain you ... sad, very sad..... (lol)

The weather is never miserable - only people are miserable!

I don't think you could accuse anyone on here of that. :D

mind you I've always said if ever I met the bloke who coined the phrase, " there's no such thing as bad weather, only bad clothes" I'd probably strangle him. :-D

I wasn't - unless you can think of anyone to whom it might apply!
