We advise you to keep to your booked departure time and do not arrive early or late, during this busy period, as we will not have space to accommodate you. You should therefore plan to check-in at least 30 minutes prior and no more than 2 hours before your booked departure time.

Passport and documentation

All passengers (including any pets that are travelling with you) will need a valid passport or ID card. A driving licence is not a valid document for travelling abroad. Please ensure you have your passport or ID card within easy reach and out of its wallet before approaching border controls.

Mandatory in car breathalyser

On the 1st July 2012, a new legislation came into force in France. All drivers of a motorised land vehicle, excluding mopeds, must possess a digital breathalyser or an unused (and immediately available) breathalyser kit which conforms to NF standards. This rule equally applies to vehicles registered outside France. Only vehicles fitted with Breathalyser Interlocks are excluded.

Failure to comply will result in on-the-spot fines being issued from 1st November 2012.

Be fully prepared. Call into the AA travelshop, in our Folkestone Passenger Terminal Building, for all compulsory or recommended car equipment required for driving abroad.

Action postponed on breath tests until March 2013 at the earliest subject to a review - and probable never.

I'm not rushing to buy a kit having failed to source one in France this summer.

We spent three weeks in September searching French supermarkets for the B/test kits. Only one of about a dozen normally stocked them but was out of stock. Spoke to a coupleof french shoppers who were unaware of the new law !. Hundred available on the Calis to Dover ferry though.

I take it Scouting never caught on in France.

Just Googled éthylotest and some interesting info.

French motoring sites confirm the "stay of execution" until March 1st at the earliest.

Also a review is currently being undertaken and the opinion seems to be the regulation will be repealed soon after.

A survey showed that less than 50% of (French) motorists had bothered to buy a test kit, so I assume most were bought by foreign visitors (assuming they could get hold of one).
